1) The study investigated the role of computer-assisted instruction (CAI) in promoting intrinsic and extrinsic motivation among Nigerian secondary school chemistry students. 2) Two modes of CAI were used - computer simulation instruction and computer tutorial instruction packages. Students taught with the computer simulation instruction performed better and had higher motivation than those taught with the computer tutorial or conventional teaching methods. 3) The study found that both forms of CAI were effective in teaching chemistry concepts and promoting student motivation regardless of student gender. CAI was recommended to help improve student performance and engagement in chemistry.
