PRACTICE NURSE
Carolyn Sipes, PhD, CNS, APRN, PMP, RN-BC, NEA-BC, FAAN, is a professor for
DNP and PhD programs; she was formerly a professor for the Nursing Informatics
Specialty Track. Dr. Sipes has more than 35 years’ experience in management, as a
director and nurse executive leader, while also teaching part time. At the executive
level, she worked as a consultant for the implementation of electronic medical records
(EMRs) at companies such as IBM, where she was involved in the iSOFT pilot project
in England with the National Health Service (NHS), and completed her project
management professional (PMP) certification through the Project Management
Institute (PMI). She also is board certified by the American Nurses Credentialing
Center in nursing informatics (RN-BC) and as an advanced nurse executive (NEA-BC),
and she holds a PhD as well as clinical nurse specialist (CNS) and advanced practice
registered nurse (APRN) licenses. She also holds eight Epic certifications for clinical
electronic health record (EHR) implementation.
Dr. Sipes has worked as a senior/principal consultant on 23 EMR implementations
over 12 years for such companies as HealthLink, Healthcare Informatics Associates,
Inc. (HIA), and Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, to name a few. Dr. Sipes is the president,
CEO, and founder of the Center for EHR Program Management, LLC, a consulting
company for the implementations of EHRs.
Dr. Sipes started her nursing career as a BSN nurse, working in neurology/
neurosurgery, then completed her MSN and CNS in Chicago, and then worked as a
pediatric CNS and as an NIH study coordinator for pediatric AIDS. She received an
NIH fellowship to complete her doctoral studies in HIV/AIDS at Rush University,
Chicago. During this time, she also worked as a director of outcomes research and
designed the Medical Outcomes System Assessment (MOS) tool to evaluate physical
functional assessments for subacute care organizations. Her dissertation on male
caregivers who provided care for their partners with HIV/AIDS has been published and
updated numerous times. During this time, she also served as the vice president of an
HIV/AIDS clinic in Chicago. After completing her doctorate, she worked as a research
scientist for a major pharmaceutical company, where she designed the Tolerability
of Medication Assessment (TOMA) tool. The research conducted using this tool
was presented at the World AIDS Conference in Barcelona, Spain. She has authored
numerous publications on project management as well as informatics competencies
and has presented research papers nationally and internationally, including at the 2016
Nursing Informatics World Nursing Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.
Dr. Sipes began designing and teaching informatics courses while consulting as
a full-time senior project manager/director. These experiences led her to teaching
informatics full time at the master’s and doctoral levels. She has also published and
presented, nationally and internationally, more than 35 nursing informatics and project
management topics, including webinars at the American Association of Critical-Care
Nurses (AACN), and is on the national American Nurses Association (ANA) 2019
Workgroup to revise the nursing informatics scope and standards of practice. She is a
fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.

FOREWORD
Project management is an important skill in both career and life, yet little
has been written to provide nurses and other healthcare professionals
acting in leadership and advanced practice roles with the tools needed to
ensure success in this area. The lack of literature and texts serves neither
educators nor healthcare professionals well and has forced them to draw
from other disciplines—until now, with the culmination of this book.
In part, the lack of project management literature may be attributed to
its fairly recent definition as well as confusion over its defining characteris-
tics and how those characteristics distinguish it from other aspects of man-
agement. According to the Project Management Institute (PMI), project
management is “the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques
to project activities to meet the project requirements” (2017, p. 10). Project
management consists of five phases—initiation, planning, implementing/
executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing. Projects differ from
other activities because of their temporary nature and intent to create a
unique product or service.
PMI also sought to establish project management as a profession, al-
though it is not necessary to formally assume that role to benefit and apply
associated knowledge and skills, as will be demonstrated through the many
examples provided in this book. It is my contention that project manage-
ment skills will play a key role in the collaborative transformation of the
healthcare delivery system through the efforts of engaged healthcare pro-
fessionals, payors, and consumers via a multitude of projects over time.
The Future of Nursing report (Institute of Medicine [IOM], 2010) specif-
ically calls for nurses to play a pivotal role in transformation. One tool to
achieve transformation is information technology. The implementation of
any information technology in a given healthcare organization exemplifies
a project. Nursing informatics as a specialty delineates project management
as key to its work. The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (2018) test
content outline for the informatics nursing credentialing examination in-
cludes all facets of project management. As a long-time nurse educator
