Professor Andrzej WArchAłoWskI - A short bIogrAPhy
Prof. dr hab. Andrzej Warchałowski was born in 1927. he finished secondary school
in 1947 and started studying at the jagiellonian University, then at the University of
Wrocław, where he got engineer’s diploma in chemistry (1950) and as a biologist a
Master’s diploma in philosophy (195l). Prof. Warchałowski obtained the degree of
doctor of natural sciences in1961, habilitation degree in 1975, and the professor’s title
in 1985. Untill 1965 he was employed in industry (electronics and sugar production),
and from 1966 untill retirement - at the University ofWrocław, first as assistant profes-
sor, then as an associate professor, extraordinary and ordinary professor. during two
consecutive terms he was director of the zoological Institute. from 1985-1987 he
worked as professor at the University of sétif (Algeria), then he returned to the Uni-
versity of Wroclaw to become the head of the department of systematic of Animals
and zoogeography (now department of biodiversity and evolutionary taxonomy),
and he retired ten years later.
Professor Warchałowski was interested in natural history since his early youth. he
started his first beetle collection as a boy of fourteen. his first collection was destroyed
in 1942 during the Warsaw Uprising, the second collection, established in 1945, exists
untill now. At first it included all central european beetles, then was limited to the
family Chrysomelidae of the Palaearctic and Oriental regions. Materials for his studies
and collection were accumulated during long-term trips to Vietnam (1961/1962), Iran
(1962/1963, 1965/66, 1968/ 68, 1970/71), greece (1964) and Morocco (1963/1965), and
during some 25 shorter, usually one-month visits to the balkan Peninsula, Asia Minor
and various Mediterranean countries. being a member of the Polish entomological
society since early post-war years, Professor Warchałowski took an active part in the
activities of the society, as the first president of the coleopterological section, later as
the editor of the Polskie Pismo entomologiczne (Polish journal of entomology) and
the “keys to the identification of Polish Insects”, then for three consecutive terms as
its president and vice-president.
he is a honorary Member of the Polish entomological society, a charter Member of
the Polish taxonomical society, a member of the organising committee of the sympo-
sia for entomofauna of central europe (untill 1992 as a representative of central-east
european countries) and a member (since 1997 a delegate) of the Asociación europea
de coleopterologia. he published a dozen articles and 79 scientific papers. the most
important of these include the three volume key to the identification of chrysomelid
beetles of Poland (1971-1978), the seven-volume monograph of chrysomelids in the
series fauna of Poland (1985-2000), the review of western-Palaearctic species of the
genus Longitarsus (1996), and his opus magnum - the key to the chrysomelidae of
europe and the Mediterranean area (2003).
