THURSDAY MORNING SESSION
"The Lord has done great things for us, whereof we
are glad."
On Thursday morning, October 17th, 1929, the fifty-
seventh annual session of the Trent River Oakey Grove
Missionary Baptist Association convened with the Mar-
shall Chapel Baptist Church, near Jacksonville, Onslow
County, N. C.
A quorum of officials not being present, at 11 o'clock
the brethren engaged in a series of praise led by Deacon
Watson, during which time earnest petitions ascended
to the throne. Rev. M. D. Stanford, who officiated in
the chair, presented Revs. W. H. Burge and B. G. Wash-
ington to conduct the devotions. They proceeded as fol-
lows: Brother Washington lined hymn No. 239, "Must
Jesus Bear the Cross Alone?" which was sung by the
audience. Scripture lesson by Rev. Burge from St. Mat-
thew, sixth chapter. He also gave short comments.
Invocation by Rev. Burge.
Second selection, No. 214, "My Soul Be on Thy Guard,"
was sung very sweetly. This ended the devotions.
The speaker, Rev. L. M. Sheppard, who was billed to
preach the introductory sermon, was presented. He
arose, and after having made very striking remarks,
selected as his text St. John 8:12, reading as follows:
"I am the light of the world." Theme: "Shine." The
sermon, which was rich and sweet, was forcefully de-
livered. Many beautiful illustrations were pictured show-
ing the necessity of Christians holding up a Christian
light. Comments were given by Rev. M. D. Stanford.
Deacons Strayhorn and E. J. Hunter were asked to take
the silver offering, which amounted to $6.25. The Mod-
erator, Rev. Kornegay, read two articles of the associa-
tional constitution, stimulating the spirit of kingdom
promotion.
It being now time for dinner, Rev. Sheppard and the
audience sang "Blest Be the Tie That Binds." Benedic-
tion by Rev. Sheppard.

THURSDAY AFTERNOON SESSION
The association reassembled at 2 o'clock. The Mod-
erator, Rev. Kornegay, in the chair. Rev. L. M. Wil-
liams and Rev. L. M. Sheppard were called to the ros-
trum to open the session, which was conducted as fol-
lows: Rev. Sheppard lined hymn No. 131, "Oh, For a
Closer Walk With God," sung very spiritually. Scripture
lesson by Rev. Williams from second Timothy, second
chapter. Invocation by Rev. Williams. Second selec-
tion, No. 149, "God Moves In a Mysterious Way," sung
by the audience with singleness of heart. Devotions be-
ing ended the Moderator arose and made admonishing
remarks reproving tardiness of the delegation, after
which the house was announced ready for the transaction
of its legal business.
Motion of Rev. M. D. Stanford that all visitors be
accorded a right to a seat and to participate in all busi-
ness except voting. Motion of Rev. L. M. Sheppard the
forenoon session be read. Motion of Bro. Clennie Pear-
son the same was adopted.
On motion of Bro. H. J. Hemby that the names of min-
isters, deacons and delegates be enrolled. Fifty-three
dollars was collected from installation fees.
On motion of Rev. M. D. Stanford that a committee of
three be appointed on hours of meeting, viz. Bro. Clennie
:
Pearson, Bro. E. J. Hunter and Sister C. E. Hatch.
On motion of Rev. M. D. Stanford that the suggestion
relative to arrears of ministers be continued.
Motion by Bro. Abraham Brimage that a committee
of five be appointed on finance, viz.: Bros. J. C. Wooten,
H. J. Hemby, W. M. Spencer, Amos Stanley and Hayward
Lecraft.
On motion of Bro. Oscar Robinson that a com-
mittee of seven be appointed on selection of officers,
viz.: Bro. Oscar Robinson, Deacon E. W. Watson, S.
Strayhorn, E. H. Houston, J. B. Montford, G. R. Mc-
Allister, Jack Peyton.
On motion of Rev. M. D. Stanford that a committee of
three be appointed on clerk service, viz. Rev. L. M. Shep-

pard, Rev. W. H. Burge, Rev. C. D. Hatchell.
Motion that a committee of three be appointed on

printing minutes, viz.: Rev. F. R. Roscoe, Rev. R. D.
Toon, Bro. A. Brimage.
On motion that all eulogies be held on Saturday at 2
p. m.
At this juncture the committee on hours reported.

The committee on printing minutes reported. The
same was by motion adopted.
The committee on clerk service.reported. (See report
elsewhere.) The same was by motion adopted.
The Committee on Selection of Officers reported. (See
report elsewhere.) The same was by motion adopted.
At this juncture the officers elect were installed in
their respective positions. Each one made short pledges
as to their official loyalty, after which the evangelist,
G. B. D. Russell, was presented and greeted by the chair.
He brought an enthusiastic exhortation to which there
was applause.
Motion prevailed for adjournment. "Together Let Us
Sweetly Live" was sung. Benediction by the Vice-Mod-
erator.
THURSDAY EVENING SESSION
The session reassembled pursuant to adjournment at
7:30 o'clock. Rev. Toon lined and sang hymn No. 139,
"There Is a Fountain Filled With Blood," which was
sweetly echoed through the chapel. Scripture lesson by
Rev. F. R. Roscoe from St. Matthew, fifth chapter. Fer-
vent invocation by Rev. F. R. Roscoe. Second hymn, No.
148, "Come Holy Spirit Heavenly Dove," sung in ardent
fashion.
Devotions being ended the Moderator presented Rev.
R. P. Lawson, who was programmed to preach the temp-
erance sermon. While a poem was rendered by Rev. Rus-
sell and the audience with much enthusiasm, the speaker
ascended the rostrum with Rev. L. M. Sheppard as alter-
nate. The text was a selection from Genesis 3:9, read-
ing thus: "Man where art thou?" Theme: "Spoiling and
Moulding God's Image." The speaker dwelt at length
upon the subject, portraying the necessity of Christians

being temperate in all things. Fervent prayer by Rev.
Sheppard.
"God Moves In a Mysterious Way" was sweetly ren-
dered by the choir.
Rev. Dr. McDowell, tutor of Shaw University and a
state missionary worker, was presented and brought a
message that was profound and indeed rich in thought
encouraging baptistical spirit and cooperation in this
field. (Applause.) Wholesome and fitting responses
were made by the Moderator and ex-Moderator. Bros.
E. H. Houston and J. B. Montford took the offering, which
amounted to $10.10.
Rev. Reese, Vice-Moderator and pastor, was presented,
who extended a cordial welcome to the delegation, fol-
lowed by Deacon P. L. Bradley. Responded to very ably
by Rev. Dr. McDowell.
Rev. Russell gave a partial outline of his evangelistic
work and was granted an appointment for Friday at 9
a. m. The pastor then made arrangement for reception
of visitors. Doxology, benedicition by the Moderator.
FRIDAY MORNING SESSION
According to the request of the evangelist, Rev. Dr.
Russell, he was granted a leave to teach for one hour.
His message was wholesome, portraying repentance as
the first fundamental principle of salvation. He also dis-
tributed literature amounting to $2.40.
Pursuant to adjournment the association reassembled
at 10 o'clock, the Moderator presiding. Rev. Toon lined
and sang hymn No. 151, "Father, I Stretch My Hands to
Thee." Scripture lesson by Rev. M..D. Stanford from
Titus, second chapter. Invocation by Rev. Toon in an
earnest manner. "I'm Going Through" was sweetly
chanted by Rev. Stanford and the audience.
Devotions were ended and the house announced ready
for the transaction of its legal business. On motion of
Bro. A. Brimage that the previous minutes be read. The
same was by motion received and adopted.
On motion of Prof. H. J. Hemby that the roll be called,
fees were collected amounting to $25.00. Quite a num-
