Awarenessandreflectioncanbeviewedfromthedifferingperspectivesofthedisciplines
informingTechnology-EnhancedLearning,suchasPsychology,EducationalandLearning
Sciences,orComputerScience.
Acommondenominatorcanbeidentified,though,andenhancing’awareness’oflearners
andotherparticipantsinvolvedinlearningprocessesbytechnologymeansaugmentingfor-
malorinformallearningexperiences,typicallyinreal-time,withinformationonprogress,
presence,outcomes,workspace,andthelike. Supporting’reflection’thenmeansenabling
learnerstocapture,adapt,re-evaluate,andshareexperienceinanticipationoffuturesitua-
tionsitwillproverelevantto. Reflectionsupporteddigitallyisacreativeact,addingsense
andmeaningtoexperiencesmade.
Combining support for ”awareness” and ”reflection” bears huge potential for improving
thelearningandtrainingwithrespecttoutility,self-regulation,usability,anduserexperi-
ence.
TheARTELworkshopseriesbrings-forthe4thtimein2014-togetherresearchersand
professionals from different backgrounds to provide a forum for discussing the multi-
facetedareaofawarenessandreflection.
For this year 2014, the workshop organizes discussion and meta-reflection amongst re-
searchers around the application of awareness and reflection in practice, its impact on
learnersandquestionsoffeasibility,andsustainabilityforawarenessandreflectionined-
ucationandwork. Thisyear’sworkshopthemeis:
Howdoescomputer-supportforawarenessandreflectionneedtobeembed-
dedintopractical(workingorlearning)contextsinorderforlearnerstoben-
efitfromsuchcomputersupport?
Summaryofthecontributions
The#ARTEL14workshopaccepted4fullpapers,1shortpaper,and4demopapers. The
accepted papers discuss awareness and reflection in diverse settings, such as blue-collar
jobsandwhite-collarjobs,workinginsmallenterprises,orlearningatuniversitylevel.
Asforthefullpapers, MaurizioMegliola, GianluigiDiVito, RobertoSanguini, Fridolin
Wild, andPaulLefrerediscussin”Creatingawarenessofkinaestheticlearningusingthe
Experience API: current practices, emerging challenges, possible solutions” an interface
specification for capturing in particular kinaesthetic learning experiences. The authors
alsodiscussataxonomyofverbsdescribinghandlingandmotion. Kinaestheticskillsare
indemandforinstanceinthemanufacturingormaintenancesectors.Thecapturedlearning
experiencescanbeutilisedtogeneratefeedbacktothelearner.
FridolinWild,PeterScott,PaulLefrere,JaakkoKarjalainen,KajHelin,AmbjornNaeve,
and Erik Isaksson situate their work ”Towards data exchange formats for learning expe-

riencesinmanufacturingworkplaces”inthemanufacturingsector. Thisworkmodelsthe
experiential and reflective learning process with a view on creating data exchange for-
mats,alsodiscussingthenecessityto-formally-talkaboutactionsintherealworldasa
complementtoactionsperformedinvirtualenvironments.
Andreas Janson, Sissy-Josefina Ernst, Katja Lehmann, and Jan Marco Leimeister have
as background for their work in ”Creating awareness and reflection in a large-scale IS
lecture - the application of a peer assessment in a flipped classroom scenario” univer-
sity learning in large-scale lectures (much more learners than instructors). They discuss
computer-supported peer assessment as possibility to induce reflection on learning con-
tent. Incontrasttotheprevioustwoworks,thiscontributionsfocussesmostlyoncognitive
insteadofmotoriccompetences.
AngelaFessl,GudrunWesiak,andGranitLuzhnicashowcasein”Applicationoverlapping
userprofilestofosterreflectivelearningatwork”thepotentialbenefitsofcollectingactiv-
ityloggingdatafrommultipleapplicationsinasingleuserprofileapplication. Thiswork
issetonthebackgroundofwhite-collarknowledgeworkers,withdesktop-andweb-based
activitylogging.
Intheirshortpaper,MichaelPrilla,OliverBlunk,JennyBimrose,andAlanBrowndiscuss
in”Reflectionassupportforcareeradaptability:Aconceptforreflectivelearninginpublic
administration”reflectionaslearningmechanismtosupportprofessionalidentitychange
asameansfororganisationalchangeinthecontextofpublicemploymentservices.
The four demo papers are started off by the contribution by Milos Kravcik, Kateryna
Neulinger,andRalfKlamma,inwhichtheauthorsshowcasewidget-basedpersonallearn-
ingenvironmentsfor”Boostinginformalworkplacelearninginsmallenterprises”.
Nils Faltin, Simon Schwantzer, and Margret Jung present the ”Activity recommendation
app - software to evaluate the usefulness of improvement recommendations created in a
team”.
MinJi,ChristineMichel,EliseLavoue,andSebastienGeorgedemonstratethe”DDART:
anawarenesssystemtofavorreflectionduringproject-basedlearning”.
Last,butnotleast,SvenCharleer,JoseLuisSantos,JorisKlerkx,andErikDuvalpresent
