A Welcome to Salvador and the 13th international conference of
the PCST Network.

From our first conference in Poitiers, France in 1988, the PCST
O Network has expanded to involve countries across the world.
With this event in Brazil, we have completed the circle by holding

a conference in every inhabited continent in the world.
P
This is a great day for the PCST Network.
Running an international organisation that crosses cultural,
language and religious boundaries presents challenges, but
it also addresses the central theme of this meeting: science
t communication for social inclusion and political engagement.

e ‘The social appropriation of science’ is a term I first heard in
g
a Colombia. It captures several ideas with implications for us as
g
n
science communicators, because of the increasingly important
e

al role science has in economic development, public policy and
c
ti personal life.
i
l
o
p
d We need to get better at discussing science across the
n
a boundaries of class, language, wealth, education, isolation and

n
culture, because science-based issues affect all of us. It is an
o
i
s essential part of citizenship.
u
l

n

The Conference will also strengthen networks across South
l
a
ci America. It is a great opportunity for science communicators to
o
s meet the international community. I hope it gives new impetus to

o your activities and a new involvement in PCST discussions.

t There is a second reason Salvador will make history. This will

i be the first time the PCST Scientific Committee will be elected,

and it is an opportunity for new people to join the task of guiding

m our Network.

Hosting PCST 2014 in Brazil will be a great opportunity to bring to light and share the

experiences, challenges, and diversity of science communication and its community
of practitioners in Latin America. O

It will motivate the participation of experts and students that would otherwise not

have the opportunity to attend this international event.
This is an appropriate time for the PCST conference to be hosted in Latin America as
Brazil plays an increasingly important role in science worldwide and our government
offers more incentives to increase science and technology outreach.
Although there have been improvements in expenditures in science and technology

(S&T) and on public engagement with S&T, most of the world faces social exclusion e
m
and the disparity in development is still widening the gap between rich and poor e
g
countries. a
g

In this scenario, science communication is challenged by the need of political al
c
engagement for social inclusion. ti

The PCST conference in Brazil aims to address this issue, evoking debate on how to d
n
raise more inclusive strategies, both in developing and developed nations. In addition, a

we confront issues such as how to improve citizenship through public engagement
o

in S&T and attempt to build novel models and practices for communication and s

l
participation. c

The city of Salvador is an ideal place for raise these issues. Salvador is the center ci

of Afro-Brazilian culture with both indigenous and Portuguese influences; it is the s

confluence of different cultures. o

The city of Salvador is notable for its cuisine, music and architecture. It has historical t

monuments dating as far back as the 17th century and was declared a World Heritage i

Site by UNESCO. While we hope the conference is productive for you, we encourage you
