Preface
The Internet of Things (IoT) opens opportunities for wearable devices, home appli-
ances, and software to share and communicate information on the Internet. In the
past, companies could rely on confining themselves to a particular geographical area
to conduct their business. Today companies are increasingly becoming location-
independent and are finding themselves to be strategically disadvantaged if they are
restricted to a particular place. The consequence of advances in information tech-
nologies and the changing boundaries of businesses have brought the importance of
data and information to the fore. It is information that helps companies realize their
objectives and helps managers make appropriate decisions. Given that the shared
data contains a large amount of private information, preserving information security
on shared data is an important issue that cannot be neglected. This has motivated
editors to investigate opportunities to introduce new technology in organizations
through research work by practitioners and innovators.
With the same aim, the editors of this book circulated a call for chapters to
researchers, entrepreneurs, and academics and received a number of quality chap-
ters. However, due to the scope of book and review reports, we were only able to
include 11 chapters in the edited book. These articles exemplify the analysis and
exploration of complex models and data sets from various domains. They provide
invaluable insights into the studied problems and offer convincing case studies and
experimental analysis. We are thankful to the authors for enduring a long wait, and
finally the result is before you.
In this book, we begin with general information on the security background of
Industrial IoT (IIoT) and continue by examining the information security related
applications and challenges that IoT encounters. We also point out research direc-
tions that could be the future work toward solutions to the security challenges that
IoT encounters. The following few chapters present the applications of artificial intel-
ligence and IoT in various domains like healthcare, telecommunication, and so on.
In another section, an empirical analysis of the healthcare industry with a spe-
cial focus on the role of IoT in digital or contactless payments was presented. The
chapter describes contactless payments, popularly referred to as cashless payments
or e-wallets. The paper presents the advantages of the association of contactless
payments with IoT in healthcare systems in Asian countries. The empirical study
explores the acceptance of new technology in healthcare clinics and hospitals using
the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The following chapter discusses the role
of Artificial Intelligence in healthcare and how it might impact the world.
The next section of the book is based on security vulnerabilities and privacy
challenges. This section discusses four key points: IoT governance, security and
privacy issues in IoT, recent trends in IoT and Big Data, and the role of IoT in robot-
ics and machine learning. Finally, some future directions and further research are
mentioned.
