The Names and ages of persons shown in this book were transcribed from a
microfilm copy of the original handwritten 1940 census enumerations for Prince William
County, Virginia. Some of the census schedules were very difficult to read and were
further complicated by the poor quality ink and paper used. Many hours were spent
transcribing, checking and proof-reading.
After transcribing the census, I rearranged the heads of families in alphabetical
order to facilitate quick reference. Non-surname individuals in the household are cross-
referenced alphabetically in the listing to the head of the household with whom they
were residing.
