Foreword
A born professor must teach, and with this volume you and I are
againthebeneficiaries ofAlanR. Gaby'sresearchandinsight. Prevent-
ing andReversing Osteoporosisis the book from which we can learn
thingsthat, ifpastbehaviorisanyindicator, the medical establishment
won't "learn" for 20 to 30 more years. Dr. Gabywas told more than
once in medical school to "shut up about that mineral and vitamin
research stuff, never mind that it's published in medical journals."
Luckily for us, he pursued his interest in nutrition and natural med-
icine. A man who insists on integrity and free scientific inquiry, Dr.
Gaby approaches his work with intelligence, energy, enthusiasm,
humor, and attention to detail. Whether he is lecturing, treating pa-
tients, orwriting columns, articles, or books, Dr. Gaby takes pains to
ensure that hiswork is accessible to everyone.
Besides being a gifted teacher, Dr. Gaby is also a talented re-
searcher. His skill is in sifting through vast amounts of research to
cull promising early research findings. He then knits these findings
into uncannilyaccurate and useful treatments forproblems that still
baffle much ofmedical science.
Dr. Gaby is able to pinpoint successful alternative treatments
because he works from a fundamental principle: the body is a

In taking good nutritional care ofour bones (and bodies), we
mustbeconcernednotonlywiththequalityofwhatwe eat,butalso
whether nutrients are digested, assimilated, metabolized, and re-

tained all ofwhich are discussed here not as incidentals, but as
integral aspects ofoptimal bone (and body) health. Where else can
you read about the importance ofstrontium, vitamin K, and silicon
in bone health? Especiallyall in one place.
Since this book is written in the late twentieth century, a dis-
cussion of mineral toxins (lead, cadmium, tin, aluminum) as well
as acid rain is relevant and included here.
One of the big "osteoporosis questions" of the last two de-
cades has been the role ofestrogen. Dr. Gabygives estrogen a new
perspective, andworkingagain fromthe "wholebody,wholebone"
principle, he tells us of research on other hormones that directly
affectbone health.
Since Preventing andReversing Osteoporosiswill probably be
studied with a bit more personal interest bywomen than by men,
Dr. Gaby has done as he always has in teaching and has included
a chapter of invaluable information about other women's health
problems, includingPMS, fibrocysticbreastdisease,abnormalmenses,
abnormal PAP smears, endometriosis, yeast infections, menopausal
symptoms, andbreast cancer.
I first met Alan Gaby when he moved across the country to
