PREFACE

In this volume we publish the work entitled Prapaiicha-
sarasira Safgraha of Geervanéndra Saraswathi. It is fairly a
big work consisting of 15,000 granthas, and hence we are
publishing it in two Paris,

Sti Sankara, the great Philosopher wrote Prapafichasara,
a work on Mantra Sastra, The present work is an elaboration
of the subject of Prapafich:

ra and hence is styled Prapaticha-
sirastra Saigraha,

The word Mantra is derived from the root ‘Man’, to
think, Thus Mantra is thought-movement vehicled by, and
expressed in speech. It is a compelling force, productive
of results of both mundane and spiritual value, material
happiness and spiritual bliss. To produce the desired effect
the mantra must be intoned in the proper way according to
oth sound and thythm-Varna and Swara, Kind thoughts
without a word will do good to all and may travel round
the world to distant friends, Mantra consists of certain
letters arranged in definite sequences of sounds

Hundreds of forms and expressions are given in the text
to suit worshippers of different age and experience. These
expressions are called Mantras, as they are the sound symbols
which, when repcatcd and reflected, free the soul from
bondage. Advanced souls do not mind the outside symbol.
Persons of gross understanding can begin their spiritual
life by worshipping the deity with the help of these forms
and expressions. These are like pegs to hang their faith on.

About Geervanendra Saraswathi we know nothing, except
that, he was a pupil of Visweswara Saraswathi, who was
a pupil of Amarendra Saraswathi and was guru of Devendra

and Narasimhasrama, He is not known to have written any
other work.

This is one of the two works taken up for publication
with aid from the Union Government under the scheme for
“Publication of rare Manuscripts”, the other work being
Dharmakuta, Kiskindha kanda and Yuddha kanda.

Our thanks are duc to Sri K. S. Subramapya Sastri,
former Pandit of this Library, who has very ably edited this
work and given us a scholarly introduction

We arc grateful to the Union as well as the State
Governments for their liberal grants for publication of this
and other valuble works in the library.
