THE EUROPEAN CONFERENCE
OF MINISTERS OF TRANSPORT [ECMT]
The ECMT is an inter-governmental organisation independent from OECD, but its Secretariat is
attached, from an administrativepoint ofview, to thatofthe OECD, which distributes its publications.
The European Conference of Ministers ofTransport (ECMT), established by a Protocol signed in
Brusselson 17thOctober1953,constitutesaforumfortheMinistersofTransportof19Europeancountries1.
The workoftheCouncil ofMinisters is prepared by a CommitteeofDeputies.
The purposesoftheConference are . "w
a) to take whatever measures may be necessary to achieve, at general or regional level, the most
efficient use and rational development of European inland transport of international impor¬
tance; f, r
b) toco-ordinateandpromotetheactivitiesofinternationalorganisationsconcerned with European
inland transport, taking intoaccount the workofsupranational authorities in this field.
MajorproblemswhicharebeingstudiedbytheECMTinclude:transportpolicy;thefinancialsituation
and organisation of railways and road transport; problems concerning inland waterway transport and
combined transport; development of European trunk lines ofcommunication; problems concerning moan
transport;thepreventionofroadaccidentsandco-ordination,atEuropeanlevel,ofroadtrafficrulesa;idroad
signsand signals; traffictrends and long-termtraffic forecasts.
Moreover,the ECMTorganises RoundTablesandSymposia. Theirconclusionsareconsidered bythe
competentorgansoftheConference,undertheauthorityoftheCommitteeofDeputies,sothatthelattermay
formulateproposals for policydecisions tobe submitted tothe Ministers. ' ' ''
In addition, the ECMT is equipped with'a computerised Documentation Centre to which inquiries
concerningtransporteconomics may be addressed.
