FOUR MAJOR DIRECTORIES
I. THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is the first major directory, printed on yellow
paper. This directory contains a complete listing of business and professional firms and
organizations within our canvass area, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings.
Included are: officers, owners, principals, number of employees, address and telephone number.
Also included are the advertisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to make
a more detailed presentation of their products or services. This directory represents reference
advertising at it’s best and merits the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or
a market for goods. In a busy and diversified community, the necessity of having this kind of
information up-to-date and immediately available is obvious. The Directory is a common
intermediary between buyer and seller and plays an important role in the daily activities of the
commercial, industrial and professional world.
Il. THE ALPHABETICAL DIRECTORY is the second major directory, printed on white paper.
This directory intends to show the name, spouse’s name, occupation, employer, address,
designation of owner-occupied homes and telephone number of each adult resident. Also included
is the name, official personnel, products and services, address and telephone number of business
and professional firms in the city.
Ill. THE STREET ADDRESS DIRECTORY is the third major directory, printed on green
paper. In this directory the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the
named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business firms are arranged
in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names and spouses names of the
householders, as well as the names of all adult residents are placed opposite the number. Business
and professional firm names also appear at their appropriate numbers. The names of the
intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this
section are the designation of owner-occupied homes, telephone numbers, new householder
symbols, the length of residence up to 9+ years, and zip/postal codes.
IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY is the fourth major directory, printed on
blue paper. This directory provides the name and address of the telephone subscriber when only a
telephone number is known.

Urged on by the desire to find a fabled "Northwest Passage" by water across theN orth American continent, Spanish and British
explorers had sailed along the Oregon and Washington coastline, but the Columbia River was not discovered until 1792, when
Captain Robert Gray of Boston entered the river and named it after his ship, the "Columbia".
In 1804, President Jefferson appointed Captains Meriweather Lewis and William Clark to head an expedition across the western
plains and mountains to the Pacific Ocean. Lewis and Clark explored the Lower Columbia region and spent the winter of
1805-1806 at Fort Clatsop, near Astoria.
Fort Clatsop, a national memorial park, the 1805-06 headquarters of Lewis & Clark near Astoria was rebuilt in its exact replica
in 1955, and is one of the finest tourist attractions on the Pacific Coast today. Located op the exact site of the original fort, 3
miles east of Highway 101 between Astoria and Warrenton.
In 1810, John Jacob Astor of New York, organized the Pacific Fur Company to engage in the fur trade on the Columbia River.
This company sent the ship "Tonquin" by sea and another party overland, the two to meet at the mouth of the Columbia River.
The men in the "Tonquin" arrived at their destination in March, 1811, and built Fort Astoria, the first permanent American
settlement on the Pacific Coast. After many hardships and loss of lives the overland party arrived in the winter of 1811. Due to
the War of 1812 and the loss of relief ships, the fort passed into the possession of the British, but was restored to the American
flag in 1818.
Astoria, today, is a modern city of about approximately 10,500 population, the commercial, financial and shipping center of the
Lower Columbia River district of Northwestern Oregon and Southwestern Washington. Most of the Astoria business district was
rebuilt following a disastrous fire in 1922 and its stores and office buildings are a credit to a city of its size.
Ocean liners load for worldwide ports at the larger waterfront dock. Astoria Bridge (4.1 mile-long bridge crosses mouth of
Columbia) across the Columbia River connects the highway system of Oregon and Washington.
Astoria’s hotels, restaurants, garages and a modern retail shopping district furnish a complete service to the traveling public.
