Oneofthemostimportantactivitiesyouwillengageinwhileatthecollegeistheprocessof
academicadvisement.Academicadvisementisatimeforyouandanadvisortodiscussyour
academicandcareergoals,toexploreoptions,andmakeinformeddecisionsonaregularbasis.You
willbeassignedanadvisorfromamongthefacultyoftheacademicdepartmentrepresentingyour
majorareaofstudyduringyourfirstsemesteratCOAifyouaretakingmorethan6credithours.If
youareundecidedaboutyourmajor,youwillbeassignedtoaStudentDevelopmentadvisor.
Itisimportantthatyoumaintaincontactwithyouradvisorthroughoutyourenrollment.Faculty
advisorspostascheduleofofficehours,andyoushouldfeelfreetocallonthemanytimeyouneed

CourseLoad
Sixteensemesterhoursofcollegeworkisconsideredthenormalstudentload.Permissionmustbe
obtainedfromtheVicePresident,Instruction,ordesignee,forschedulingmorethan18hoursof
work.Thisisnotnecessarywhenstudentsareregisteringforthespecificcourseloaddesignatedin
theiroccupationalprogramofstudy. Astudentenrolledinatleast12hoursofworkisconsidereda
full-timestudent.Forstudentstogainsophomorestatusatthecollege,theymustearnaminimum

Plagiarism: StudentsattendingCollegeofTheAlbemarleareexpectedtoadheretothehighestethicalstandards

SubstanceAbusePolicyasoutlinedbytheCOA2009-2011AcademicCatalog
CollegeofTheAlbemarleprovidesasafeandhealthyenvironmentforstudentstopursueacademicexcellence,
technicalandvocationaltraining,careeropportunities,andpersonalgrowthanddevelopment. Protectingthis
environmentincludeskeepingitdrug-free.CollegeofTheAlbemarlemaypermitorrequestlawenforcement
personneltoconductdrugsearchesonCollegeofTheAlbemarleproperty.Suchsearchesmaybeperformedon
arandomorperiodicbasisandmayalsobeperformedwhenadministrationorlawenforcementofficershavea
reasonablesuspicionthatillegaldrugsmaybepresentoncampus.Allsearcheswillbeexecutedincompliance
withandtothefullestextentallowedbystateandfederallaws.Someprograms,suchasnursing,haveamore
detailedsubstanceabusepolicy.Ifthereisanysuspicionofsubstanceabuse,thestudentisrequiredtohaveand
payforadrugscreen.
Undernoconditionwillintoxicatingliquor(definedasanybeveragecontainingasmuchasone-halfofone
percentofalcohol),narcotics,illicitdrugs,hallucinogens,barbiturates,oramphetaminesbepermittedinor
oncollegeproperty. Off-campuscollege-sponsoredeventsaresubjecttotherequirementsofstateandfederal
laws(Chapter18BofGeneralStatutesofNorthCarolina,21CFRPart1308andotherFederalRegulations).
Studentsrepresentingthecollegeatoff-campuseventsarerequiredtoknowandfollowthestudentrightsand
responsibilitiesprintedinthecurrentcollegecatalog. Nostudentorganizationorclubshallpurchase,giveaway,
orsellanyaforementionedintoxicatingbeverageorsubstance. Anyoneknowntobeundertheinfluenceofany
aforementionedsubstanceisprohibitedfromthecollegeproperty. Inaddition,theintroduction,possession,
sale,exchange,and/orusethereofisconsideredgroundsfordismissalandpossiblelegalaction. Useofadrug
authorizedbyamedicalprescriptionfromaregisteredphysicianshallnotbeconsideredaviolationofthisrule.
"Controlledsubstances"includeanydruglistedin21CFRPart1308andotherfederalregulations. Generally,
theseinclude,butarenotlimitedto,heroin,marijuana,cocaine,PCP,and"crack". Theyalsoinclude"legaldrugs"
whicharenotprescribedbyalicensedphysician.
Alcoholicbeveragesincludebeer,wine,whiskey,andanyotherbeveragelistedinChapter18BoftheGeneral
StatuteofNorthCarolina. Anystudentconvictedofviolatinganycriminaldrugstatutewhileintheworkforce,
(work-study)onthecollegepremises,orwhilepartofacollege-sponsoredactivitywillbesubjecttodisciplinary
actionuptoandincludingterminationanddismissal. Analternativemayincludecompletionofanapproved
drugabuseoralcoholrehabilitationprogramasapreconditionforcontinuedemploymentorenrollmentatthe
college. Studentsmustinformthecollegeinwritingwithinten(10)workingdaysofbeingconvictedofaviolation
ofanycriminaldrugstatuteoralcoholicbeveragestatutethatoccurredwhileonthecollegecampusorwhile
participatingincollege-sponsoredactivities.
