L’inquisitore domenicano Michele Ghislieri ascese al soglio pontificio il 7 gennaio 1566 col nome di Pio V. Sostenne poi, in ottica anti-ottomana, la costituzione della Lega Santa, l’alleanza militare fra il Papato, la Spagna di Filippo II e la Repubblica di Venezia. Il trionfo di Lepanto del 1571, ottenuto dalle galere cristiane contro la flotta turca in una delle più grandi battaglie navali mai combattute nel Mediterraneo, è uno degli esiti più celebrati del suo regno. Dopo il fortunato volume Il Concilio Vaticano II, Roberto de Mattei dedica la sua nuova opera a uno dei pontefici più influenti della storia, capace non solo di difendere la cristianità da minacce esterne e interne ma anche di restaurare numerosi aspetti della liturgia cattolica.
