The study found that pif3 mutant seedlings grown in darkness expressed higher levels of genes involved in chlorophyll biosynthesis and photosynthesis compared to wild-type seedlings. They also accumulated more protochlorophyllide, a precursor to chlorophyll. When transferred to light, the pif3 mutant seedlings underwent more severe photobleaching than wild-type due to overaccumulation of protochlorophyllide in the dark. A quadruple mutant lacking four phytochrome-interacting transcription factors, including PIF3, displayed constitutive photomorphogenesis even in darkness. This suggests that phytochromes promote photomorphogenesis
