Dear Colleagues and Conference Participants,
We would like to thank you all, once again, for your participation in the second edition of the
Phononics 20xx conference series, Phononics 2013: The Second International Conference on
Phononic Crystals/Metamaterials, Phonon Transport and Optomechanics, Sharm El-Sheikh,
Egypt, June 2–7, 2013. We extend a special welcome to you in Egypt, which as you might recall
was the original host of Phononics 2011 before the relocation due to the historical events that
took place in this country in 2011.
After the success of Phononics 2011 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA, it is truly delightful to see
our community getting together again around a discipline that in some aspects appears to be
mature and well-rooted in the archives of condensed matter physics, acoustics and theoretical
mechanics, yet at the same time is an appealingly young and vibrant emerging field. Perhaps
this is the magic of phononics. Compared to resembling disciplines, such as electronics and
photonics, phononics is indeed youthful and continues to grow at a remarkable rate, especially
when viewed liberally with no limiting constraints to any particular length scale, discipline or
application–as suggested by the conference themes. Even the underlying “phonon” mechanism
is open under phononics, whether it is Bragg scattering, local resonance or any other
phenomenon yet to be discovered.

This year, Phononics 2013 consists of five tracks: (1) phononic crystals, (2) phononic
metamaterials, (3) nanoscale phonon transport, (4) optomechanics and coupled phenomena,
and (5) wave propagation in periodic structures. For more information on the conference and

We hope you will enjoy Phononics 2013, and as we stated two years ago, once again it is our
aspiration that this forum’s participants will together continue to lay the foundation for the

Information About the Conference Phononics 2013
Information about the Conference
The study of phonons – although a core discipline in the conventional condensed matter physics
literature – is currently being viewed in a new light. Whether examined at the nanoscale, microscale
or larger scales, the analysis and manipulation of phonons (aka phononics) is opening up a new
technological frontier with a potential impact that could match that of electronics almost half a
century ago. Indeed a sister field, photonics, is gathering similar momentum. Looking closely,
phononics encompasses a range of interconnected disciplines, usually labeled in terms of the type
of host “material” that provides the medium for phononic wave propagation. These include
phononic crystals, phononic metamaterials, superlattices and periodic structures. The application
domains that these phononic materials are impacting, with increasing promise, range from
vibration isolation in MEMS components, through frequency sensing in RF communications, to
nano-scale thermal transport control in semiconductors. With the recent advent of metamaterials,
exotic applications are now added to the list such as acoustic cloaking and superlensing. The
interaction of mechanical waves with their optical counterpart in a lattice, i.e., optomechanics, is
opening up yet another barrage of opportunities, especially in telecommunications.
The coming-of-age of these closely-related disciplines provides a converging point of historical
significance for the science of phonons. In 2009, an International Workshop on Phononic Crystals
took place in Nice, France and was attended by around 30 experts in the field from around the
world. Building on this effort, a larger-in-scale international forum was established in 2011 and
Phononics 2011 was inaugurated as a prime international conference for the field. Phononics 2013,
the second in the bi-annual series, welcomes scientists and engineers from across the world and
across all related disciplines.
The scientific focus of the conference is on five main themes underlying the various research tracks
in the emerging field of phononics:
(1) Phononic crystals
(2) Phononic metamaterials
(3) Nano-scale phonon transport
(4) Optomechanics and coupled phenomena
(5) Wave propagation in periodic structures
The technical program also includes ONR-Global-sponsored student paper competitions for best
oral and poster presentations. Arrangements are under way to enable publication of a selection of
papers from the conference in a special issue of an archival journal. The number of abstracts
submitted to the conference exceeded 130, including from 69 distinguished invited speakers and
Organizers’ Colloquium participants, and represents a large number of nations from across the
globe. The figure below captures the geographical distribution of recent visitors to the conference
website (in April 2013).
This year we are also pleased to announce the founding and launching of the International
Phononics Society (IPS). The mission of the society is to promote and advance the field of phononics
by providing opportunities for international collaboration and exchange of knowledge in research
and education. The society will undergo, and sustain, the following activities pertaining to the field:

(1) Provide the editorial leadership for a dedicated journal
(2) Oversee the organization of the biennial Phononics 20xx conference
(3) Recognize the intellectual contributions of its members and the research community at
large
(4) Provide a forum for exchange of timely news and information of relevance to its members
The society will also serve as a unifying body that will encourage coordination and cooperation
among chapters, or national societies, dedicated to the field from across the world. More
information about the founding members, election to board membership, and activities of IPS can

Furthermore, the Bloch Prize, initially inaugurated at Phononics 2011, is being awarded in Phononics
2013. This prize honors individuals who have made outstanding, sustained contributions in the field
of phononics (including phononic crystals, acoustic/elastic metamaterials, nanoscale phonon
transport, wave propagation in periodic structures, coupled phenomena involving phonons, and
related areas) generally over periods representing substantial portions of their professional careers.
The medal is awarded every two years at the time of the Phononics 20xx conference. The winner
delivers the Bloch Lecture at the conference, presenting the results of recent work of his/her choice,
and is also invited to write a 6-page paper on recent work to be published alongside the conference
proceedings in the form of a booklet. More information on the Bloch Prize and this year's recipient
is available in a separate booklet.
Moreover, this year we are excited to announce the inauguration of a second honorary prize, the
Brillouin Medal. This award focuses on a specific seminal contribution (as presented by up to three
related publications) by one or a group of researchers (up to three researchers) working in
collaboration. Similar to the Bloch Prize, this award will also be biennial and administered by IPS.
Nominations will be solicited from the community as a whole in the form of a “Letter to the Board”
and the IPS Board Members will select the winning individual or group. More information on the
