David Theo Goldberg is Director of the University of California Humanities
Research Institute and Professor of African American Studies and Criminology,
Law and Society, and a Fellow in the Critical Theory Institute, University of
California, Irvine. He is the author and editor of many books, most notably The
Racial State(2002), Relocating Postcolonialism(2002), Racial Subjects: Writing
on Race in America (1997), Multiculturalism: A Critical Reader (1995) and
Racist Culture: Philosophy and the Politics of Meaning(1993).
Claire Jowitt teaches Renaissance literature and culture at the University of
Wales Aberystwyth. She is author of Voyage Drama and Gender Politics
1589–1642: Real and Imagined Worlds (2002) and co-editor of The Arts of
Seventeenth-Century Science: Representations of the Natural World in European
and North American Culture(2002). She is currently editing Three Renaissance
Pirate Playsfor the Revels series and writing a book on representations of piracy
and privateering in the Renaissance.
Elliott Horowitz, a native of New York City, is Associate Professor of Jewish
History at Bar-Ilan University in Israel. An expanded version of his paper will
appear in his forthcoming Reckless Rites: Purim and the Legacy of Jewish
Violence(Princeton University Press).
Tony Kushneris Professor of Jewish/non-Jewish relations in the Department of
History, University of Southampton. He has written widely on British Jewish
history, the history of immigration and racism in Britain, the Holocaust and
history and memory. He has recently co-authored The Holocaust (Manchester
University Press) and We Europeans?, a study of the social anthropological
organisation Mass-Observation, to be published by Ashgate.
Thomas S. Kuttner is on the Faculty of Law at the University of New
Brunswick. His teaching and research interests are in public law, including
human rights. In addition to his scholarly interests, Professor Kuttner sits as
Vice-Chair of the New Brunswick Labour and Employment Board and is active
as a labour arbitrator and mediator. He has acted as counsel pro bono in several
human rights cases before both the Courts of New Brunswick and the Supreme
Court of Canada, and his paper builds upon that experience.
Gavin I. Langmuir received his BAin History from the University of Toronto
and his Ph.D. in medieval history from Harvard University, and has taught for
most of his career at Stanford University, where he is now Emeritus Professor of
History. Initially a scholar of French medieval legal and constitutional history, he
has devoted most of his scholarly energy to questions about the nature, formation

and causes of intense hostility against Jews in Europe. He distinguishes between
antisemitism and other forms of hostility against Jews; by his definition of
antisemitism, intense and highly irrational hostility to Jews similar to that of the
Nazis first began in northern Europe in the twelfth century.
Mark Leveneattempts to combine being Reader in Comparative History at the
University of Southampton with environmental and peace work. The Coming of
Genocide, the first of his three-volume history of genocide in the modern world,
is forthcoming.
Irven M. Resnickis Professor of Philosophy of Religion and holds an endowed
chair in Judaic Studies at the University of Tennessee (Chattanooga). With
Kenneth F. Kitchell, he has translated Albert the Great’s De animalibus(2 vols;
Baltimore 1999) and has in press both an annotated bibliography for Albert the
Great, 1900–2000, and a translation of Albert’s Quaestiones super de
animalibus.
Ritchie Robertsonis a Professor of German at Oxford University and a Fellow
of St John’s College. His books include Kafka: Judaism, Politics, and Literature
(1985), Heine, in the series Jewish Thinkers (1988), and The ‘Jewish Question’
in German Literature, 1749–1939 (1999), and (as editor) The Cambridge
Companion to Thomas Mann (2002). He has also edited The German-Jewish
Dialogue: an anthology of literary texts, 1749–1993, World’s Classics (1999).
David M. Seymour teaches in the School of Law, Lancaster University. His
doctoral thesis and continuing research are in the area of critical theories of
antisemitism. He has also published work in film and law studies.
Yvonne Sherwood is senior lecturer in OT/Tanakh and Jewish Studies at the
University of Glasgow. Previous publications include The Prostitute and the
Prophet (1996) and ABiblical Text and Its Afterlives: The Survival of Jonah in
Western Culture (2000). She is currently working on a monograph on the
‘sacrifice’of Abraham’s beloved son in Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
Norman Solomonwas born in Cardiff, South Wales, and educated at St John’s
College, Cambridge. He was rabbi to Orthodox congregations in Britain until he
became founder–director of the Centre for the Study of Judaism and
Jewish/Christian Relations at Selly Oak Colleges, Birmingham. He was Fellow
in Modern Jewish Thought at the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies
1995–2001 and is a member of the Oxford University Teaching and Research
Unit in Hebrew and Jewish Studies. He has published several books on Judaism.

Adam Sutcliffe is Associate Professor of European Jewish History at the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is the author of Judaism and
Enlightenment (2003), and is currently working on a study of approaches to
nationhood, ethnicity and Jewishness in early nineteenth-century political
radicalism.
Nadia Valmanis Research Fellow at the AHRB Parkes Centre for the Study of
Jewish/non-Jewish relations at the University of Southampton. She has
published on nineteenth-century Anglo-Jewish literary history and is working on
a study of the representation of the Jewess in Victorian Christian and Jewish
literature. She is editor of the journal Jewish Culture and History.
