19th & 20th Feb 2011
Pharmafest’11, a National Level Pharmacy Student Symposium, was organized
by Baroda College of Pharmacy and Parul Institute of Pharmacy, managed by
Parul Trust, on 19th and 20th Feb 2011.
Pharmafest is organized every year to provide a platform for undergraduate and
post graduate students of pharmacy to interact with each other and exchange
their views regarding the recent developments in the field of pharmacy. Various
events like poster and model presentations, elocution competition and quiz
competition are organized during two days of Pharmafest.
This year we had a participation of 1500 students from colleges in and outside
Gujarat. Following is the brief report of Pharmafest’11
Day 1 (19th Feb 2011, Saturday)
The symposium was inaugurated by Chief Guest Mr. Himanshu Jani,
Sr. HR Manager, Alembic Ltd and Guest of honor Mr. Suryakant Chaudhary,
Manager HR, Bharat Parenterals Ltd.
Events organized on 19th Feb were poster presentation and elocution
competition. Around 400 posters were presented on the prescribed themes.
Themes for Poster Presentations were
Subject: Pharmaceutics/Pharmaceutical Biotechnology
Theme: 1) Site specific drug delivery
2) Time modulated drug delivery
Subject: Pharmaceutical Analysis/Quality Assurance
Theme: 1) Recent advances in Bioanalytical techniques
2) Structural identification of drugs by any one analytical technique.
Subject: Pharmaceutical chemistry
Theme: 1) Serendipity in medicinal drug discovery
2) CADD: Fundamentals, techniques or applications
Subject: Pharmacology
Theme: 1) Pharmacological intervention of any neurodegenerative,
metabolic and infectious disease
2) Non conventional therapeutic techniques (Stem cell therapy, Gene
therapy etc.)
Subject: Pharmacognosy
Theme: 1) Any one herbal drug discovery made by national Institutes
(CDRI, NBRI, IIIM etc.)
2) Global trade of any one herb for various applications and position
of India in it.
86 students took part in Elocution Competition deliberating on topics like
(cid:190) Scope of Pharm D. in Indian scenario
(cid:190) Pharmacy curriculum and teaching methodology: views and ideas

Day 2 (20th Feb 2011, Sunday)
Events organized on 20th Feb were model presentation and quiz competition.
Around 75 models were displayed on the prescribed themes.
Themes for Model competition were
Subject: Pharmaceutics/Pharmaceutical Biotechnology
Theme: Any unit operation employed in manufacturing of Pharmaceutical
dosage forms.
Subject: Pharmaceutical Analysis/Quality Assurance
Theme: Any analytical instrument
Subject: Pharmaceutical chemistry
Theme: Green Chemistry
Subject: Pharmacology
Theme: 1) Physiological aspects of major body systems
2) Pathological aspects of neurodegenerative, metabolic and infectious
diseases.
Subject: Pharmacognosy
Theme: 1) Any one extraction technique/QC for herbal drug or formulation
2) Any aspect of plant tissue culture.
224 students took part in Quiz completion which was held on 20th February
2011. Questions based on general knowledge and pharmacy knowledge were
asked in different rounds. The teams were screened through two screening
rounds to get the 6 teams for the final quiz round.
Model Presentations
Quiz Competition
Poster, Model and Elocution competitions were judged by invited dignitaries
from different colleges and industries of Gujarat and prizes were given to
3 winners for each subject of each event.
Prize Distributions
Valedictory function was held on 20th February after completion of all events.
Dr. Jignesh Patel, Director - Baroque Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd. was the chief
guest and Ms. Neelam kumari – Executive HR Oxygen Bioresearch Ltd. was
the guest of honour.
The overwhelming response of the student participants in Pharmafest’11 reflects
the success and need for such events in the present scenario.
