Peter Aeschlimann immigrated to America in 1834, sailing from France and eventually settled in
Wayne Co.,OH. No source indicates if his three sons immigrated at this time. Christian would have
been 18. The motivation for immigration may have been to avoid compulsary military service, a
common reason for immigration among European Mennonites at this time. Some sources say Peter's
wife Katie died in Switzerland before Peter came to America, but in the Aeschliman family Bible,
Christian records, "In the year of our Lord 1847 on Nov 16, my mother died". Further data unavailable.

The Aeschliman Cem. is located one mile south of Pettisville, on the north side of CR C, between TR
18 and CR 19. (SW1/4, SE1/4, Sec 31, T7N, R6E.) HISTORY: The cemetery is located along the old
Archbold-West Barre Road on land deeded to Peter Aeschliman in 1841. In 1874 acreage was deeded

"After the Aeschlimann family came to America for awhile they lived in Wayne County, Ohio, and
eventually entered a tract of government land in German township, Fulton County. It was all in timber
and the surroundings were wild. There was an old log cabin on the place, and it evidently had been
used as a stable. It was in that hut Christian Aeschliman and his wife had to make their abode for
awhile. He was a typical pioneer, and resolutely applied himself to the great task of clearing his
property of timber. Eventually he owned 160 acres, most of which was cleared, and upon which he
erected adequate out-buildings, and a commodious, comfortable residence". Land was cleared,
buildings constructed and the country developed through the cooperative helpfulness among
neighbors. Chris was a good carpenter and builder. He gained renown as a barn framer and barn
raiser. The only blueprint was in his head. Trees from land in the area were used. The logs were not
sawed in these early years, but were hewed by hand, using a broad axe and adz. Other basic tools
were a couple of chisels (a mortise chisel and a corner chisel), some mauls, mallets, beetles (a beetle
was a heavy mallet weighing about 40 pounds especially built and strengthened with iron hoops
around the large pounding end) and a small auger for boring holes to insert wooden pins which were
used instead of nails to fasten the framed timbers together. Depending on which part of the barn they
were used, the girders or beams were 4"x4" or larger, some six to nine inches thick. The main girder,
about twelve to eighteen inches thick, was usually the heart of the barn. The four or five framed or
braced sections (also called bents) for the side walls were fashioned by the framer on the ground in
preparation for raising day. These sections were sturdy and very heavy for a two-story barn. When it
came time to raise these sides onto the foundation, neighbors for miles around (perhaps one hundred
to two hundred men) were invited to a barn raising. They brought their own pike poles which were
about 16 feet long. The poles had pike pins on one end to keep the frame, or bent, from slipping. On
command, all the men would push the section up with these pike poles. The barn raiser stood on the
walls, or framework, and rode up on them while they were being pushed up into place. A barn raising
was an event looked forward to. Families came--the men raised the barn, the women prepared the
food, the children played. Hard work? Of course. But a gathering for work, fellowship and fun. Chris
built bank barns, two stories tall, about 60 to 80 feet long and 35 to 40 feet wide with an A-shaped roof.
There was a lean-to roof on one end of the barn. Its purpose was primarily to shelter a team of horses
and a wagon-load of ear corn or other grain in the event of rain. The roof also provided shelter for
other horse-drawn equipment. Cows, horses, and other livestock were sheltered on the ground floor
below the hay and straw which were stored on second floor. In the center of this top floor, space wide
enough for a threshing floor was allowed, with hay and straw stored on each side. The threshing floor
also served as a run-way for horse drawn hay wagons. To get the wagon to the second floor, a hill of
dirt was banked up on one side of the barn--hence the name, bank barn. This side of the barn was
built of stone at least to the top of the bank of dirt. When the hay or straw had been unloaded, the
wagon was backed out and down the bank. Often a machine for threshing would be placed on the
threshing floor. The grain fell into a hopper, or a grain bagger from which men carried bags of grain to
storage bins. Straw and chaff was blown through a pipe which extended out the other side of the barn
where a straw stack would be made for livestock. The story is told that one time Chris was building a
barn and, for some reason unknown to us now, another man took over. When the walls were all put
together on the ground and were ready to raise, the men with their pike poles were all there but simply
couldn't get the sides up. Then someone said, "Well, we've got to get old Aeschliman to raise this
barn." Chris must have been a stern talker. He gave the men a good talking to and then said, If I've
come to raise this barn, we're going to raise it." Then he stood on the wall and called, "He-e-e-e, Ho-o-

o-o He-e-e-v-e" and up it went, set squarely upright in place on the foundation. Christian and Verena
A. had 15 children, three of whom died quite young. When the rest were grown, Chris gave each of
them $1000. Some perhaps all, invested in land. Joel and Jonathan went to Missouri where land was
cheaper and settled there. Leah, Livina, and Elisa also married and settled in Missouri. Emeline and
Rebecca never married. Emeline lived with Jonathan and his wife, Mary, until their deaths. Nathaniel,
Theophilus and Elias stayed in Ohio, as did Rebecca (Becky), Catharine and Mary.
Note from Adeline Aeschliman: When the Christian (?? or Jacob)
Frey family was asked to stand to be counted to leave France, Christian Aeschliman stood with the
Frey family and came over with them. He later married Verena Frey, their daughter.
Christian emigrated with his father at age 18...sailed from France in 1834 and settled in Wayne County
Ohio.

Oct. 17, 1867, in Rousan, France; passed from this life Feb. 20, 1958, in the
Fulton County Home; aged 90 y. 4 m. 3 d. On Feb. 12, 1889, she was united in
marriage to Elias A. Aeschliman, who preceded her in death in 1936. She is
survived by nieces and nephews and many friends. Two of her nephews (Ralph
and Alfred Thierry) was reared in her home. She was a member of the West
Clinton Mennonite Church. Funeral services were held in the Penrod Funeral
Home, Wauseon, Ohio, Feb. 23, in charge of D. L. Sommers. Interment in the

SMUCKER. - On the 13th of August, near Orrville, Wayne Co., Ohio, Pre. Jonathan Smucker, aged 66
years, 7 months and 18 days. He was buried on the 15th at the Oakgrove Meeting-house, followed by
many friends and acquaintances. Bro. Smucker was born in Mifflin county, Pa., coming with his
parents to Wayne county, Ohio in 1828, since which time he was a resident of said county. He leaves
a wife, 6 children and 21 grand children to mourn his death, Bro. S., suffered some 15 months. At first
his disease was supposed to be dyspepsia, but he continued to grow worse and suffered intensely.
Yet he bore it all in Christian patience. A post mortem examination showed his disease to have been
cancer of the stomach, liver and kidneys, which accounted for his great sufferings. Services were
conducted by J. Nusbaum and J. K. Yoder in German and D. Hostetler in English.

AESCHELMAN.-On the 27 th of November, near Pettisville, Fulton Co., Ohio, Peter Aeschelman, aged
66 years, 9 months and 21 days. He went out into the woods with two of his sons, and as they were
sawing down a tree, it split, fell backwards, and so seriously injured him that he lived only three hours
after the accident occurred. He remained conscious to the last. This was a severe blow to the family,
but they need not mourn as those who have no hope. Services by Jos. Egly, Daniel and Jos. Rupp,
from John 11: 19-28.

Roth. - Nicholas N. Roth was born in Fulton Co, Ohio Feb. 9, 1850; died at his
home north of Pettisville, Ohio, Feb. 11, 1925; aged 75 y. 2 d. His first marriage
was with Catherine Grieser, who died after a short married life. His second
marriage was with Catherine Roth. With her he shared the joys and sorrows of life
for 45 years. To them were born 2 sons and 1 daughter (Samuel, Enos, and Anna).
Bro. Roth was of a family of 5 sons and 4 daughters, of whom only one is now
living. He leaves his aged, sorrowing wife, three children, one sister, and many
relatives and friends. Bro. Roth was a faithful and consistent member of the
Amish Mennonite Church from his youth. Funeral services were held Feb. 15 at
the Central A.M. Church, conducted by Eli Frey assisted by S.D. Grieser.
Interment in Eckley Cemetery.
