Foreword
In recent years, with the broadening diagnostic terminology in the
fieldof DevelopmentalPediatricsandtheincreaseinthenumberof
children being diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder,
Barbara Quinn and Anthony Malone found a need to provide
families with appropriate reference material. Current materials
referred more to the severe end of the spectrum and did not
individualizetheapproachforeachchild.
Dr Malone and Mrs Quinn felt that the first step following the
diagnosisofadevelopmentaldisorderisfortheparenttohaveafull
understandingof whatthediagnosismeansandhowtheirchildfits
intothatdiagnosticterminology.Onlythencantheyeffectivelymove
on to accept the diagnosis and proceed with implementing
appropriateeducationandinterventionfortheirchild.Thisbookis
intended to educate and support families through the difficult
processofanswering‘Whatdoesthisallmean?’and‘Wheredowegofrom
here?’

About the Authors
BarbaraL.Quinnbringstoherwriting16yearsofnursingexperience.
In her role as Nurse Clinician in Developmental Pediatrics at Albany
Medical College, she works directly with families of children with
Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD). Barbara is committed to
educating parents and helping them to come to terms with what a
developmentaldiagnosismeanstobothchildandfamily.Thisbookisan
extensionof hercommitmenttosupportthosefamilies.
Asafreelancewriter,Barbarahasauthoredarticlesonchilddevelop-
ment and parenting issues. She has a graduate degree in Educational
Psychology.
Barbara is the mother of two school-age children who, she states,
provideherwithhergreatestlessonsinchilddevelopmentastheyshare
theincrediblegiftsof theirchildhood.
Anthony F. Maloneisapediatricianwithaspecialtyinchilddevelop-
ment. In his 20 years of practice, he has worked with many families of
childrenwithawidevarietyofdevelopmentaldifficulties.AsDirectorof
the Division of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics at Albany
MedicalCollege,hewearsmanyhats.Inadditiontoevaluatingchildren
andmakingrecommendationstofamilies,healsohastheresponsibilityof
educatingupandcomingpediatriciansandotherprofessionalsinthefield.
InadditiontohistimespentattheDevelopmentalPediatricoffice,Dr
Maloneprovidespediatriccaretotypicalandspecialneedschildreninhis
activeprivatepractice.Hisexpertisewasrecentlyrecognizedbyselection
toappearinthenewlyreleasedguide,TheBestDoctorsinAmerica:Northeast
Region.
Dr Malone has much ‘hands on’ parenting experience and genuine
appreciationforthechallengesof parenting,aswellasthejoys.
