Preface
The current volume contains essays from the international conference
“Perspectives on the Formation of the Book of the Twelve” that took
place January 14–16, 2011 at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität
Münster. The question of the development of the Book of the Twelve
has been explored intensively over the last twenty years. Comprehen-
sive models have been put forward and numerous individual studies
have been treated. The goal of the conference was to bring together the
primary protagonists of this field of inquiry. Scholars from both sides
of the Atlantic came together to investigate points of scholarly consen-
sus, to lay out problems that have not yet been solved satisfactorily,
and to develop perspectives for further research. These scholars includ-
ed the pioneers who put forward the initial proposals as well as schol-
ars of the second generation who have just recently developed their
own theses about the development of the Twelve.
We want to thank all those who enabled the conference to take
place and the current volume to appear. The Deutsche Forschungsge-
meinschaft and the University of Münster’s International Office and
Cluster of Excellence “Religion and Politics” generously financed the
meeting. Students and doctoral candidates at the University provided
invaluable help, especially Ruth Ebach, Dagrun Pflüger and Svenja von
Rönn.
We also sincerely thank the editors of BZAW – Prof. Dr. John Bar-
ton, Prof. Dr. F.W. Dobbs-Allsopp, Prof. Dr. Reinhard G. Kratz and
Prof. Dr. Markus Witte – for accepting this volume into their series, as
well as Sabina Dabrowski, Dr. Albrecht Döhnert and Dr. Sabine
Krämer at Walter de Gruyter for the engaging editorial care they pro-
vided.
Our gratitude goes to Dr. Paul L. Redditt for his extensive help in
polishing the English for those essays composed by non-native speak-
ers. We also thank those same authors for presenting their essays in
English to provide the volume a wider audience. Finally, we want to
thank Vera Bongert und Corinna Pfannkuche for compiling the index.
