Bernhard Oestreichs Werk ist die erste Monographie in deutscher Sprache über diese neue Methode der Bibelinterpretation und die erste zur Performanzkritik der Paulusbriefe überhaupt. Im ersten Kapitel behandelt er zunächst die Wurzeln der Performanzkritik. Sie ist aus der rhetorischen Exegese und der Mündlichkeitsforschung erwachsen und nimmt Anregungen aus Theaterwissenschaft und Performanzkunst auf. Danach definiert er Performanz und stellt darauf aufbauend die Methode vor. In den folgenden drei Kapiteln wendet er diese Methode auf die Paulusbriefe und andere frühchristliche Briefe an. Dabei wird erkennbar, dass diese Texte so gestaltet sind, dass der Vortragende durch sie an den Empfängern handelt und Interaktion im Publikum provoziert. Die Paulusbriefe werden als soziale Ereignisse lebendig, ihre Intentionen werden deutlicher erkennbar und das Verständnis schwieriger Passagen wird erleichtert.
