An experiment was carried out during kharif, 2013 at Agricultural College
Farm, Bapatla, to study the ‘Performance of rice varieties under machine
transplanting with different aged seedlings’. The soil of experimental site was
clay loam in texture, neutral in reaction, low in available nitrogen, available
phosphorus and high in available potassium.
The experiment consisted of four varieties i.e., BPT 5204, BPT 2270,
NLR 145 and BPT 3291 as main plot treatments and three age of seedlings i.e., 2,
3 and 4 week old seedlings as sub plot treatments. The experiment was laid out in
split plot design and replicated thrice.
The initial plant stand (No. m-2) was significantly influenced by age of
seedlings, but not by the varieties. Among the different ages of seedlings, 2 week
old seedlings recorded higher initial plant stand m-2 followed by 3 week and 4
week old seedlings.
The growth parameters of rice such as plant height, tiller production and
drymatter production were significantly influenced by varieties and the age of
seedlings at all the stages of observation. Plant height and drymatter production
increased linearly with advancement of crop growth. Tiller number increased
linearly from 30 DAT to 90 DAT after which there was reduction in number of
tillers due to death irrespective of varieties and age of seedlings. Among the four
varieties tested; plant height, number of tillers and drymatter production were
higher with BPT 2270 followed by BPT 5204, NLR 145 and BPT 3291. Among
the different aged seedlings, taller plants, more number of tillers and drymatter
production were obtained with transplanting of 2 week old seedlings followed by
3 week and 4 week old seedlings at all stages of crop growth. Delay in
transplanting caused reduction in these growth attributes.
The number of days to 50% flowering and days to maturity increased
gradually with successive advancement in the age of seedlings. Among the four
varieties tested; BPT 3291 flowered and matured earlier than NLR 145, BPT
5204 and BPT 2270. The crop transplanted with 2 week old seedlings took less
number of days to flowering and maturity than other two age of seedlings.
Both CGR and RGR were significantly influenced by the varieties and age
of seedlings. CGR was increased from 30-60 DAT to 60-90 DAT and thereafter
decreased from 60-90 DAT to 90 DAT-maturity. RGR was decreased linearly
from 30-60 DAT to 90 DAT-maturity. Among the varieties tested, CGR and
RGR were significantly higher with BPT 2270 when compared to other three
varieties at all stages. Among the age of seedlings at all stages, higher CGR and
RGR were recorded with 2 week old seedlings.
Yield components were also significantly influenced by varieties and the
age of seedlings. Among the four varieties tested, yield attributes like number of
productive tillers m-2, total number of grains panicle-1, number of filled grains
panicle-1 and panicle length were higher in cultivar BPT 2270 followed by BPT
5204, NLR 145 and BPT 3291. All the yield attributes were higher in crop
planted with 2 week old seedlings followed by 3 week and least in 4 week old
seedlings. The test weight was not influenced by the age of seedlings. The test
weight was maximum in NLR 145 and minimum in BPT 5204.
The age of seedlings significantly influenced the grain yield, straw yield
but not the harvest index. Among the four varieties tested; the cultivar, BPT 2270
recorded higher grain yield and straw yield followed by BPT 5204, NLR 145 and
BPT 3291. Among the different aged seedlings, 2 week old seedlings recorded
higher grain yield, straw yield which was on a par with 3 week old seedlings.
The harvest index was not influenced by both the varieties and age of the
seedlings.
Gross returns, net returns and return per rupee invested were higher in the
variety BPT 2270 with transplanting of 2 week old seedlings followed by BPT
5204 with 2 week old seedlings transplanted.
The interaction between the age of seedlings and varieties was found to be
non-significant with respect to growth parameters, yield attributes and yield of
machine transplanted rice.
From the present investigation, it can be concluded that BPT 2270
performed better in giving the maximum yield, net returns and returns per rupee
investment. 2 or 3 week old seedlings were found to be better, resulting in higher
productivity and better economic returns under machine transplanted rice.
