NEW DIRECTIONS IN RELIGION AND LITERATURE

Consider modernism through two women’s embodied voice-
visions, as transcribed by men.
On the one hand, there is Freud’s account of Ida Bauer’s first dream,
excavated in his Dora: Fragments of an Analysis of a Case of Hysteria.
Freud began writing his modern foundational account of female
hysteria in late 1900 and completed it by January 1901, although it was
not published until 1905.1
A house was on fire.* My father was standing beside my bed
and woke me up. I dressed quickly. Mother wanted to stop and
save her jewel- case; but Father said: “I refuse to let myself
and my two children be burnt for the sake of your jewel- case.”
We hurried downstairs, and as soon as I was outside I woke
