John P. Vanden Heuvel, Ph.D., is currently an assistant professor in the
Department of Veterinary Science at the Pennsylvania State University, Uni-
versity Park. Dr. Vanden Heuvel is a faculty member of the Molecular Toxi-
cology Program within the Life Science Consortium and the Environmental
Resources Research Institute as well as the Pathobiology Program of the
Department of Veterinary Science. Dr. Vanden Heuvel received his B.S. degree
in pharmacology and toxicology, and his Ph.D. in 1991 in environmental
toxicology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Subsequently, he
received postdoctoral training at the National Institute of Environmental Health
Sciences in Research Triangle Park, NC, in the Laboratory of Biochemical
Risk Analysis. Prior to accepting his present position at Penn State University,
Dr. Vanden Heuvel was an assistant professor of pharmacology and toxicology
at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN.
Dr. Vanden Heuvel is a member of the Society of Toxicology, the American
Association of Cancer Research, and the American Association for the
Advancement of Science. He has published and presented research in a variety
of national and international journals of toxicology, biochemistry, and molec-
ular biology. He also teaches courses in molecular toxicology, molecular
carcinogenesis, and pharmacology. Dr. Vanden Heuvel has received research
grants from the National Institutes of Health (National Institute of Diabetes
and Digestive and Kidney Disorders, National Institute of Environmental
Health Sciences), Zeneca Pharmaceutical, Searle-Monsanto, National Toxicol-
ogy Program, American Institute of Cancer Research, National Cattlemen’s
Beef Association, and a variety of university- and state-sponsored programs.
He is currently researching the signal transduction pathways utilized by fatty
acid-like tumor-promoting chemicals as well as endogenous lipids in mam-
malian cells.
