. Issuesinaddressingthedevelopmentalproblem
This volume deals with the developmental problem in both native (L1) and
non-native(L2)acquisition.Thedevelopmentalproblemoflanguageacquisition
relates to how acquisition proceeds, that is, how learnersmove fromone de-
velopmentalstagetoanother,andhowandwhygrammarsdevelopinacertain
fashion.Themainfocusofgenerativelanguagedevelopmentresearchinrecent
decades,however,hasbeenthelogical problemoflanguageacquisition,thatis,
explainingthenatureofthelearners’systemandwhetherandhowlearnersgo
beyondthe inputtoacquire complexlinguisticknowledge.The developmen-
talandthelogicalproblemsofL1/L2acquisitionarenotinoppositiontoeach
other;rather,theyarecomplementary.AsHawkins(2001)argues,wecanprob-
ablylearnmoreaboutthenatureofL2acquisition(orjustasmuch)bylooking
atdevelopmentthanbylookingatthelogicalproblem.Thus,anycompletethe-
oryofL1/L2acquisitionneedstoaddressbothoftheseissues.InGregg’s(1996)
terms,acompletetheoryofacquisitionshouldincorporatebothpropertyand
transitiontheories. It isthislatteraspect of acquisition, thatis, development,
whichwillbeaddressedinthepresentvolume.Webelievethatevidencefrom
developmentalpaths in different domains of acquisition can contribute to a
unifiedtheoryoflanguagedevelopment.
Analysing paths of development (which need not necessarily result in
grammars that converge on the target language; see e.g. Bley-Vroman 1989
on the comparative fallacy) will furnish us with the evidence necessary to
determinethesimilaritiesanddifferenceswhichmayexistbetweentypesofac-
