I Longobardi non fecero eccezione ed entrarono anch’essi da quella parte, senza che gli storici abbiano però la certezza assoluta sul loro percorso. Infatti alcuni di essi (e tra questi Paolo Diacono) sostengono che passarono sopra al non meglio identificato monte Regio, chiamato così perché dalla sua cima re Alboino ebbe la visione del suo futuro regno, e si tratta secondo alcuni del Matajur, al confine tra l’Italia e la Slovenia, secondo altri del monte Nanos, in Slovenia. Altri storici si dicono certi che l’itinerario seguito fu la valle del Vipacco e la strada Postumia. In mancanza di certezze, ho scelto un’ipotesi mia, attendibile se non altro perché la prima fortezza espugnata fu Cividale. Comunque, se risulterà che ho sbagliato (o meglio che ha sbagliato l’Astico) sarà cosa da poco e, rifacendomi a quanto scritto nell’introduzione, costituirà uno spunto per chi mi legge per andarsi a cercare la verità, se ne avrà voglia, spulciando gli archivi alla ricerca degli avari e scarsi documenti che di quel tempo ci sono rimasti.
