ABSTRACT
The e ffect of tannin concentration and the ad*
d itio n of synthetic tanning m aterial on the p a rtic le size
of ordinary quebracho tannin *• m ater infusions, was stu
died. The study was made by u ltra filtra tio n . The re
su lts show no apparent change in p a rtic le size eith er
w ith ehange in tannin concentration or addition of syn
th e tic tanning m aterial, w ithin the lim its of concentra
tio n studied.

Introduction
Two of the most in terestin g and im portant phen
omena induced by the addition of a synthetic tanning mat
e ria l to a vegetable tannin infusion are the solubliza-
tio n of phlobaphenes and sta b iliz a tio n of the infusion
against e lectro ly tes. As has been previously pointed out
(3) the solvent action of a synthetic tanning m aterial
may be explained by one, or a combination of two or more,
of the follow ing hypotheses:
1. the action of the synthetic tanning mat
e ria l is prim arily dispersive, forming sm aller p a rtic le s
of tannin which are more e asily dissolved in the solvent.
2. the synthetic tanning m aterial unites chem
ic a lly with the vegetable tannin to form a more lyophilie
co llo id .
3. the synthetic tanning m aterial is adsorbed
on the vegetable tannin p a rticle s and the resu lta n t par
tic le s are more lyophilie than the o rig in al vegetable tan
nin p a rtic le s.
The sta b iliz a tio n of vegetable tannin infusions
against electro ly tes may also be explained by these hypo
theses (4).
