CATHETERS, Urethral, Urinary
1. Catheter sizes are designated by the Charriere (ch) gauge system –even
numbers only. (The equivalent metric sizes for Charriere gauges 6-30 are
2.0mm – 10mm, rising in 0.66mm). Where the prescriber does not state size,
size 14 or 16 should be supplied.

2. If the prescriber when ordering a Foley Catheter does not state a balloon size,
a 10ml balloon catheter should be supplied or a 5ml balloon in the case of a
paediatric catheter.

NB BS1695: 1990 defines the balloon size as that amount of fluid required to
inflate fully the balloon, including the volume of the lumen. Care should be taken
to distinguish between an adult catheter formerly labelled as “5ml” but requiring
10ml for full inflation and a paediatric catheter labelled “5ml” in accordance with
the BS.

3. Each sealed unit pack (i.e. one, five, six, ten or twenty-five for Nelaton pack
as appropriate, five units only for Scott, one unit only for Foley packs) to be
supplied in an outer protective pack as received from the wholesaler or
manufacturer.
4. The average period that a Foley catheter is kept in place is given as a guide
and may vary considerably with individual patients. All patients should be
assessed on an individual basis and their optimum time for catheter change
established.
5. Where the brand is not stated by the prescriber, the basic price of each listed
