District to allow students in kindergarten through sixth grade who reside in the Los Altos School
District portion of PAUSD’s boundaries to attend LASD’s Gardner Bullis School.

A. APPROVAL OF NEW HIGH SCHOOL COURSES FOR 2016-2017 Discussion 9
The Board will review and discuss two new courses at the high school level: AP Physics1, and
Principles of Biomedical Science (Project Lead the Way).
B. ONE TIME STATE FUNDED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Discussion 10
The Board will review and discuss the Educator Effectiveness Program Plan. Due to time
constraints, this item was not discussed at its February 9, 2016 meeting.
C. SECOND INTERIM FINANCIAL REPORT Discussion 11
The Board will discuss the Second Interim report. Action to be considered for the next meeting is
to give a positive certification to the County Superintendent and to approve the budget revisions
listed in the projected year totals.
D. ADDISON PROJECT DONATION, PRE-CONSTRUCTION BUDGET AND Discussion 12
CONTRACTS
The Board will discuss a generous donation of $1,330,000 for pre-construction activities related to
construction at Addison School.
E. FUNDING FOR HIGH SCHOOL 2015-2016 MENTAL HEALTH AND Action 13

The Board will consider approval of additional funds for FY 2015-16 and funding for increased
staffing services and education to students in health and wellness programs PK-12.

STRATEGIC PLAN INITIATIVE
Governance and Communication

Student Successes:

Sixty Gunn High students recently qualified to compete in the upcoming Future Business Leaders
of America (FBLA) state competition. The students earned the state level spots after bringing
home 44 awards in different categories from the recent Bay Section regional competition, which
was held in Daly City in early February. 2,300 students from 24 different schools participated in
this regional event. The state competition is scheduled for April. The FBLA competitive events
honor and spotlight student work excellence in a broad range of business and career-related areas.
Gunn High mathematics teacher Ms. Toni Smith is the teacher advisor for the Gunn High FBLA
chapter.

Fourteen Gunn High students recently won Scholastic Writing Awards. The students are Jerry
Guo, Brent Han, Deiana Hristov, Kevin Ji, Cheryl Kao, Nicole Knauer, Sofia Krylova, Maya
Mahony, Moriah Meyers, Helen Nguyen, Jojo Qi, Patricia Tang, Priya Thomas, and Shirley
Zhang.

The California Education Theatre Association (CETA) recently honored four Palo Alto High
students who are members of their school’s Paly Theatre Arts Thespian Troupe 909. CETA
honored the students as follows:
• Performance scholarships were awarded to Joelle Dong-Heller (monologue), Jason
Pollak (song), and Sophie Swezey (monologue). All three Paly students will perform their
winning pieces during the upcoming California Youth in Theatre Day (CYIT), an annual
arts advocacy day held at the State Capitol in Sacramento. The students received the
Thespian CYIT Performance Scholarships.
• Paly student Nadia Leinhos won a statewide essay competition on the importance of
Theatre Arts Education. The Educational Theatre Association sponsors this competition.
Nadia will present her essay as part of the opening ceremonies for CYIT day.
The CYIT day takes place March 15 in Sacramento. Attendees typically include members of the
state legislature, as well as teachers, parents, and students from across California. Paly visual and
performing arts teacher Ms. Kathleen Woods is the school’s theatre program director and the
international thespian troupe 909 director.

I love the theatre. I can’t deny it, even if I wanted to try. A play can transport you
to any world. In the audience you are part of a story that is a multitude of ideas woven
into one. On stage, you are the storyteller, embodying others’ experiences and
breathing them into life. Theatre invites us to think about things we may not have
realized could exist. It connects us to our emotions and teaches us that it’s okay to feel.
Theatre education allows students to access and open doors within them, and the
lessons we learn from this experience are invaluable.
I discovered theatre the summer after third grade. I had spent the previous year
among strangers, having skipped a grade, and all I can recall from that year is an
assortment of stares and whispers. I was different enough already as a shy, dark-
skinned girl in a predominantly white school, but being seen as too smart and too young
practically guaranteed a lack of friends. But I attended my school’s Shakespeare camp
that summer, and those two weeks changed my life. I emerged from my shell to perform
as Ariel in The Tempest, and not only had I enjoyed myself thoroughly and made some
friends, I also performed well. That experience planted a seed, and it has since
flowered.
Over the years I’ve become a confident performer, and I’m also fortunate to have
many deep friendships. Theatre has given me perspective, taught me empathy, and
helped me develop a sense of self worth and purpose. Theatre gives young people a
way to access their emotions, display them and be unafraid. Without regular access to

these safe spaces for personal growth, many more students, outsiders like me, might
not get a chance to believe in themselves.
As a minority, being onstage at all is a challenge to society’s norms, and that’s a
good thing. When race-blind casting is used, the audience is given the chance to view
me– and people who look like me– in a different way. When I am playing a role that
showcases my ethnicity, it can provoke thought and challenge assumptions. In this way,
theatre aids the ongoing struggle to demolish racial prejudice in the world, and allows
me to use my talents to help. By giving me a chance, my school’s theatre department
helps our audiences think about race and equality in America in new and powerful
ways.
Because of school theatre, I’ve grown into a person my third grade self would
look up to. It has shown me the world I live in and given me the strength to challenge it.
Even if a career onstage is not what everyone aspires to, an education in the theatrical
arts gives us access to ways of thinking and doing that broaden our mindset and
worldview. Every performance is a message to the audience, a lesson in the
understanding of different worlds. When I get to deliver that message, the experience is
irreplaceable.
