Preface
The Oxford Large Print Dictionary is a compact and up-
to-date dictionary presented in a large, clear type. The
text, which is based on that of the Oxford English
Minidictionary, draws on extensive research into
current English carried out by the Oxford Dictionaries
Department. In the light of this research new words,
senses, and phrases have been selected for inclusion
and the most important and frequent meanings placed
first in each entry. The definitions are written in a style
that is concise and easy to understand.
The large type and generous spacing and margins
make this an ideal dictionary for adults and
schoolchildren seeking a text that is clear and easy to
read. It is especially suitable for people with sight
problems.
In producing this dictionary, the editors have worked
closely with the Royal National Institute of the Blind
in the UK, who have approved and made
recommendations on all aspects of design and layout.

Pronunciation
A guide to pronunciation is given for any word that is
difficult to pronounce, or difficult to recognize when
read, or spelt in the same way as another word but
pronounced differently. Pronunciations are not given
for easy words that are familiar to everyone.
Words are broken up into small units, usually of
one syllable. The syllable that is spoken with most
stress in a word of two or more syllables is shown
in bold, like this.

Labels
Unless otherwise stated, the words and senses in this
dictionary are all part of standard English. Some
words, however, are appropriate only to certain
situations, or are found only in certain contexts or
varieties of English, and where this is the case a label
(or a combination of labels) is used.
For example, the labels [INFORMAL], [ARCHAIC], and [POETIC]
refer to a particular level of use in the language; in the
case Of [OFFENSIVE], [DEROGATORY], and [VULGAR SLANG], the
labels act as warnings that the term in question may
cause offence.

The [US] label indicates that a word is used in
US English but is not standard in British English.
Subject labels, such as [MUSIC], [physics], and [cricket],
indicate that a word or phrase is associated with a
particular subject field or specialist activity.
Note on trade marks and
proprietary status
This book includes some words which are or are asserted
to be proprietary names or trade marks. Their inclusion
does not imply that they have acquired for legal purposes
a non-proprietary or general significance, nor is any other
judgement implied concerning their legal status.
In cases where the editor has some evidence that a word
is used as a proprietary name or trade mark this is
indicated by the label [TRADE MARK], but no judgement
concerning the legal status of such words is made or
implied thereby
