TheinfluenceonOvidofHesiod,themostimportantarchaicGreek
poetafterHomer,hasbeenunderestimated.Yet,asthisbookshows,
a profound engagement with Hesiod’s themes is central to Ovid’s
poetic world. As a poet who praised women instead of men and
optedforstylisticdelicacyinsteadofepicgrandeur,Hesiodisalways
contrastedwith Homer. Ovid revives this epic rivalry by setting the
HesiodiccharacterofhisMetamorphosesagainsttheHomericcharac-
terofVirgil’sAeneid.Dr.ZiogasexploresnotonlyOvid’sintertextual
engagementwithHesiod’sworks,butalsohisdialoguewiththerich
scholarly,philosophical,andliterarytraditionofHesiodicreception.
AnimportantcontributiontothestudyofOvidandthewiderpoetry
of the Augustan age, the book also forms an excellent case study in
howthereceptionofprevioustraditionscanbecomethedrivingforce
ofpoeticcreation.

Preface
ThisbookfollowsagrowingscholarlyinterestintheCatalogueofWomen
and the reception of Hesiod in antiquity. Martina Hirschberger’s edition
and commentary in , followed by Glenn Most’s Loeb in , have
improved our knowledge of the fragments vastly. In the meantime, a col-
lectionofessayseditedbyRichardHunterinhascontributedalong
overdueliteraryassessmentoftheHesiodicCatalogueanditsreceptionin
HellenisticandLatinpoetry.KirkOrmand’smonographontheCatalogue
and Joseph Farrell’s forthcoming study on genealogies in the Metamor-
phosesareavidlyanticipated.ThesestudiesshednewlightontheHesiodic
fragments,sometimesrevising,othertimesbuildingonMartinWest’sfun-
damentalworkontheCatalogue.ChadSchroeder’sHesiodintheHellenistic
Imagination()andHugoKoning’sHesiod:TheOtherPoet()are
invaluablestudiesofHesiod’sreceptionfromthearchaictotheHellenistic
period, while Brill’s Companion to Hesiod, edited by Franco Montanari,
AntoniosRengakos,andChristosTsagalis(),includes(amongseveral
significantcontributions)animportantarticlebyGianpieroRosationthe
LatinreceptionofHesiod.Someoftheseworksappearedduringthefinal
stages of this book’s gestation, and taking them into account was often
challengingbutmostlyrewarding.
Working on a fragmentary work is both a fascinating and frustrating
experience.ForthetextoftheCatalogue,IusedMerkelbachandWest’sfirst
() and third edition (), but I constantly consulted Hirschberger
()andMost().Ihavebeencautiousaboutbuildinganargument
on emendations and, whenever I havedone it, it is because the formulaic
diction of the Catalogue often makes it possible to restore lacunose lines
