National statistics
• Estimated than 1 in 3 people in England and
Wales will develop cancer at some point in their
lives
• The incidence of all cancers has increased by
24% over last 25 years
• Every year > 200,000 people are diagnosed with
cancer in England and Wales, with 120,000 deaths
(approx 25% all deaths)
• 2 million people at any time will be living with
cancer in the UK

• Three most common cancers
– for men (in ascending order) are colorectal (14%); lung
(14%); prostate (25%)
– for women: colorectal (11%); lung (12%); breast (31%)

• WHO predict 40% of cancers are preventable
• 1/3 cancers can be cured if treated early
• Mostly a disease of older people
– N.B 600 million worldwide >60yrs, this will
double by 2020

• In 2010, lung, bowel, breast and prostate cancers
accounted for 46% of all cancer deaths in the UK
• In men: Lung cancer was the most common cause
of cancer death (24%); then prostate (13%) then
colo-rectal (10%)
• In women: Lung cancer was the most common
cause of cancer death (21% of all); breast 15%;
colorectal 10%

London Cancer Alliance (LCA)
• The LCA was established in 2011 as the integrated cancer
system across west and south London.

• We work collaboratively with 16 NHS provider
organisations, including two academic health science
centres, and the voluntary sector.

• We provide comprehensive, integrated cancer patient
pathways and services within formal, governed structures
to drive improvements in patient cancer outcomes and
experience for the population we serve.
