This(cid:3)study(cid:3)concentrates(cid:3)on(cid:3)three(cid:3)concepts:(cid:3)memory,(cid:3)identity(cid:3)and(cid:3)change.(cid:3)(cid:12)(cid:3)study(cid:3)the(cid:3)
concept(cid:3)of(cid:3)memory(cid:3)in(cid:3)the(cid:3)formation(cid:3)of(cid:3)(cid:131)(cid:3)communal(cid:3)identity.(cid:3)Individual(cid:3)experiences(cid:3)
and(cid:3)emotions(cid:3)are(cid:3)given(cid:3)interpretation(cid:3)and(cid:3)meaning(cid:3)from(cid:3)the(cid:3)basis(cid:3)of(cid:3)the(cid:3)individual's(cid:3)
own(cid:3)sphere(cid:3)of(cid:3)knowledge,(cid:3)taught(cid:3)and(cid:3)transmitted(cid:3)by(cid:3)his(cid:3)own(cid:3)culture(cid:3)and(cid:3)society.(cid:3)This(cid:3)
memory(cid:3) then(cid:3) becomes(cid:3) the(cid:3) shared(cid:3) idea(cid:3) and(cid:3) ideal(cid:3) of(cid:3) the(cid:3) community,(cid:3) and(cid:3) when(cid:3)
transmitted(cid:3) to(cid:3) the(cid:3) next(cid:3) generations(cid:3) it(cid:3) overcomes(cid:3) the(cid:3) boundaries(cid:3) of(cid:3) time.(cid:3) In(cid:3) this(cid:3)
process,(cid:3)the(cid:3)memory,(cid:3)therefore,(cid:3)is(cid:3)essentially(cid:3)the(cid:3)factor(cid:3)which(cid:3)at(cid:3)the(cid:3)same(cid:3)time(cid:3)defines(cid:3)
and(cid:3)is(cid:3)defined(cid:3)by(cid:3)the(cid:3)community(cid:3)itself.(cid:3)What(cid:3)people(cid:3)call(cid:3)“change”(cid:3)can(cid:3)be(cid:3)considered(cid:3)to(cid:3)
be(cid:3)(cid:131)(cid:3)constant(cid:3)process(cid:3)of(cid:3)remembering(cid:3)and(cid:3)forgetting.(cid:3)
The(cid:3)state(cid:3)of(cid:3)Jordan(cid:3)has(cid:3)created(cid:3)(cid:131)(cid:3)national(cid:3)identity(cid:3)where(cid:3)the(cid:3)Bedouin(cid:3)past(cid:3)and(cid:3)
culture(cid:3) are(cid:3) seen(cid:3) as(cid:3) the(cid:3) promoted(cid:3) symbols(cid:3) of(cid:3) the(cid:3) state.(cid:3) At(cid:3) the(cid:3) same(cid:3) time,(cid:3) the(cid:3)
government(cid:3)has(cid:3)worked(cid:3)on(cid:3)the(cid:3)modernization(cid:3)of(cid:3)the(cid:3)Bedouins:(cid:3)the(cid:3)nomads(cid:3)are(cid:3)being(cid:3)
sedentarized,(cid:3)secular(cid:3)and(cid:3)religious(cid:3)education,(cid:3)as(cid:3)well(cid:3)as(cid:3)modern(cid:3)technology(cid:3)and(cid:3)health(cid:3)
care,(cid:3)are(cid:3)available(cid:3)even(cid:3)in(cid:3)the(cid:3)areas(cid:3)that(cid:3)used(cid:3)to(cid:3)be(cid:3)the(cid:3)most(cid:3)dangerous(cid:3)peripheries(cid:3)in(cid:3)
the(cid:3)past.(cid:3)These(cid:3)processes(cid:3)have(cid:3)also(cid:3)influenced(cid:3)the(cid:3)identity(cid:3)of(cid:3)the(cid:3)inhabitants(cid:3)of(cid:3)south(cid:3)
Jordan(cid:3)in(cid:3)the(cid:3)last(cid:3)few(cid:3)decades,(cid:3)yet(cid:3)despite(cid:3)all(cid:3)the(cid:3)changes,(cid:3)the(cid:3)most(cid:3)prominent(cid:3)factors(cid:3)
in(cid:3)their(cid:3)identity(cid:3)continue(cid:3)to(cid:3)be(cid:3)the(cid:3)tribal(cid:3)heritage(cid:3)and(cid:3)being(cid:3)(cid:131)(cid:3)Bedouin.(cid:3)
(cid:12)(cid:3)am(cid:3)approaching(cid:3)these(cid:3)concepts(cid:3)from(cid:3)the(cid:3)case(cid:3)of(cid:3)the(cid:3)local(cid:3)“saints”(cid:3)(Awliy(cid:162)).(cid:3)In(cid:3)
the(cid:3)everyday(cid:3)religion,(cid:3)these(cid:3)holy(cid:3)men(cid:3)and(cid:3)women(cid:3)have(cid:3)gained(cid:3)an(cid:3)important(cid:3)role:(cid:3)
people(cid:3)have(cid:3)addressed(cid:3)the(cid:3)saints(cid:3)in(cid:3)order(cid:3)to(cid:3)gain(cid:3)health,(cid:3)wealth,(cid:3)rain,(cid:3)fertility(cid:3)and(cid:3)
protection(cid:3)among(cid:3)other(cid:3)things.(cid:3)(cid:12)(cid:3)have(cid:3)conducted(cid:3)fieldwork(cid:3)in(cid:3)south(cid:3)Jordan(cid:3)and(cid:3)located(cid:3)
several(cid:3)holy(cid:3)sites,(cid:3)many(cid:3)of(cid:3)them(cid:3)uncharted(cid:3)until(cid:3)now.(cid:3)Recording(cid:3)folklore(cid:3)and(cid:3)old(cid:3)
memories(cid:3) of(cid:3) the(cid:3) sacred(cid:3) places,(cid:3) while(cid:3) also(cid:3) observing(cid:3) the(cid:3) religious(cid:3) practices(cid:3) and(cid:3)
everyday(cid:3)life(cid:3)of(cid:3)the(cid:3)local(cid:3)people(cid:3)has(cid:3)been(cid:3)the(cid:3)goal(cid:3)of(cid:3)this(cid:3)work.(cid:3)
When(cid:3)studying(cid:3)the(cid:3)local(cid:3)tradition(cid:3)of(cid:3)holy(cid:3)places(cid:3)in(cid:3)South(cid:3)Jordan,(cid:3)it(cid:3)is(cid:3)evident(cid:3)
that(cid:3)the(cid:3)old(cid:3)traditions(cid:3)are(cid:3)being(cid:3)forgotten,(cid:3)but(cid:3)what(cid:3)is(cid:3)replacing(cid:3)the(cid:3)old(cid:3)traditions,(cid:3)and(cid:3)
how(cid:3)does(cid:3)this(cid:3)change(cid:3)affect(cid:3)the(cid:3)identity(cid:3)of(cid:3)the(cid:3)local(cid:3)people?(cid:3)When(cid:3)such(cid:3)places(cid:3)lose(cid:3)
their(cid:3)significance,(cid:3)what(cid:3)effect(cid:3)does(cid:3)it(cid:3)have(cid:3)(cid:514)(cid:3)or(cid:3)perhaps,(cid:3)is(cid:3)it(cid:3)(cid:131)(cid:3)result(cid:3)of(cid:3)(cid:131)(cid:3)change(cid:3)that(cid:3)
has(cid:3)already(cid:3)taken(cid:3)place(cid:3)(cid:514)(cid:3)in(cid:3)the(cid:3)identity(cid:3)of(cid:3)the(cid:3)people?(cid:3)One(cid:3)topic(cid:3)of(cid:3)special(cid:3)interest(cid:3)is(cid:3)
the(cid:3)role(cid:3)of(cid:3)women,(cid:3)as(cid:3)they(cid:3)played(cid:3)(cid:131)(cid:3)very(cid:3)active(cid:3)part(cid:3)in(cid:3)many(cid:3)of(cid:3)the(cid:3)old(cid:3)traditions(cid:3)and(cid:3)
rituals.(cid:3)Another(cid:3)central(cid:3)issue(cid:3)is(cid:3)the(cid:3)tribal(cid:3)integrity(cid:3)and(cid:3)identity,(cid:3)as(cid:3)many(cid:3)of(cid:3)the(cid:3)sacred(cid:3)
places(cid:3)were(cid:3)strongly(cid:3)connected(cid:3)to(cid:3)the(cid:3)past(cid:3)of(cid:3)the(cid:3)tribes,(cid:3)with(cid:3)various(cid:3)saints(cid:3)being(cid:3)their(cid:3)
ancestors(cid:3) and(cid:3) earlier(cid:3) leaders.(cid:3) Comparing(cid:3) the(cid:3) change(cid:3) in(cid:3) Southern(cid:3) Jordan(cid:3) to(cid:3) the(cid:3)
processes(cid:3)that(cid:3)are(cid:3)taking(cid:3)place(cid:3)in(cid:3)other(cid:3)parts(cid:3)of(cid:3)the(cid:3)world(cid:3)has(cid:3)provided(cid:3)(cid:131)(cid:3)framework(cid:3)
for(cid:3)this(cid:3)research.(cid:3)
