Пулемет изначально предназначался под 7,62-мм патрон НАТО, позволяющий пробивать легкую броню. Однако в итоге М-60 был способен стрелять различными видами патронов. Выпускались как пехотные варианты, рассчитанные на расчет из двух человек, так и модели, предназначенные для установки на броне- и авиатехнику. М-60 активно использовались во Вьетнаме, где он доказал свою боевую эффективность при ведении заградительного огня во время приземления с вертолетов в джунглях (М-60 можно увидеть в руках у Сильвестра Сталлоне в фильмах серии «Рэмбо», причем не один, а сразу два, что, учитывая вес пулемета (10,5 кг), само по себе является подвигом :). М-60 обеспечивали огневую поддержку во время проведения операции «Буря в пустыне». На севере Ирака в 2005 г. модификация М-60D использовалась американскими стрелками на вертолетах UH-60 Blackhawk.
