IFIPwas foundedin 1960underthe auspicesof UNESCO, followingthe First World
ComputerCongressheldinParisthepreviousyear.Anumbrellaorganizationforsoci-
etiesworkingininformationprocessing,IFIP’saimistwo-fold:tosupportinformation
processingwithinitsmembercountriesandtoencouragetechnologytransfertodevel-
opingnations.Asitsmissionstatementclearlystates,
IFIP’smissionistobetheleading,trulyinternational,apoliticalorganizationwhich
encourages and assists in the development, exploitation and application of
informationtechnologyforthebenefitofallpeople.
IFIP is a non-profitmakingorganization,run almost solely by 2500 volunteers. It
operatesthrougha numberoftechnicalcommittees,whichorganizeeventsandpubli-
cations. IFIP’s events range from an international congress to local seminars, but the
mostimportantare:
(cid:129) TheIFIPWorldComputerCongress,heldeverysecondyear;
(cid:129) Openconferences;
(cid:129) Workingconferences.
TheflagshipeventistheIFIPWorldComputerCongress,atwhichbothinvitedand
contributed papers are presented. Contributed papers are rigorously refereed and the
rejectionrateishigh.
AswiththeCongress,participationintheopenconferencesisopentoallandpapers
maybeinvitedorsubmitted.Again,submittedpapersarestringentlyrefereed.
Theworkingconferencesarestructureddifferently.Theyareusuallyrunbyawork-
inggroupandattendanceissmallandbyinvitationonly.Theirpurposeistocreatean
atmosphereconducivetoinnovationanddevelopment.Refereeingisalsorigorousand
papersaresubjectedtoextensivegroupdiscussion.
PublicationsarisingfromIFIPeventsvary.ThepaperspresentedattheIFIPWorld
ComputerCongressandatopenconferencesarepublishedasconferenceproceedings,
while the results of the workingconferencesare often publishedas collections of se-
lectedandeditedpapers.
Any nationalsociety whose primaryactivity is aboutinformationprocessingmay
applyto becomea fullmemberofIFIP, althoughfullmembershipis restrictedto one
societypercountry.FullmembersareentitledtovoteattheannualGeneralAssembly,
Nationalsocietiespreferringalesscommittedinvolvementmayapplyforassociateor
correspondingmembership.Associate membersenjoy the same benefitsas fullmem-
bers, but without voting rights. Corresponding members are not represented in IFIP
bodies.Affiliatedmembershipisopentonon-nationalsocieties,andindividualandhon-
orarymembershipschemesarealsooffered.

Welcome to the 11th InternationalConference on Open Source Systems, marking 10
yearssincetheinitialOSSconferences.Thisannualconferenceisnowrecognizedasthe
primaryeventfortheopensourceresearchcommunity,attractingnotonlyhigh-quality
papers, but also building a community around the technical program, a collection of
workshops,andaDoctoralConsortium.Wemadeseveralchangesinplanningthetech-
nicalprogramthis year.First, we sharplyreducedthe size of theProgramCommittee
and added people who had not previouslyserved on as an OSS Program Committee.
Thatstep madeiteasierfortheProgramCommitteemembersandtheProgramCom-
mitteechairstocalibratethereviews.Wewereverypleasedtoreceive50submissions
forthetechnicalprogram,fromwhichweselected15.WearemostgratefultothePro-
gramCommitteemembersforhandlingthelargerthanaveragereviewingload,andfor
theirthoughtfulreviews,alldoneonatightschedule.
We chose the title “Open Source Systems: Adoptionand Impact”for this volume
inrecognitionofthechangeintheroleofopensourcesoftwarewithincompaniesand
organizations.When the OSS conferencesstarted in 2005, open source software was
oftentreatedasa“second-class”citizen,withmanyorganizationsclaiming(incorrectly
in mostcases) notto use open sourceand its advocatesviewed as beingout-of-touch
with “real world” software developmentand deploymentissues. Now, however,open
source software is fully mainstream. Virtually all of the major software and systems
companies are active users of open source, and are often contributors as well. Com-
panies have established their own policies for use of open source, and routinely in-
clude open source in their products. Linux servers are common, while organizations
relyonHadoopandotheropensourcetoolsformanaginglargevolumesofdata.Most
importantly,open source software has movedfrom its early status of providingfunc-
tional equivalents of proprietary software to today’s situation where developers and
researchers are innovating with open source software. In key software areas such as
data management, cloud infrastructure, service-oriented architectures, mobile operat-
ingsystems,andtheInternetofThings,opensourcesoftwaresolutionsarefrequently
amongtheleadersintheircategory.Evenso,proprietarysoftwarestillhasamajorrole,
and will retain that role in the foreseeable future. Organizations and institutions still
havemassiveexistinginvestmentsinproprietarysoftware,withmanydisincentivesfor
moving away from those products. However, as organizations look for ways to save
money, open source software becomes increasingly attractive, particularly as poten-
tialusersgaingreaterconfidenceinitsqualityandsecurity.Theopensourceresearch
communityishelpingtodrivethistransition,workingwithorganizationstohelpthem
evaluateandadoptopensource,oftenbasedonresearchstudiespublishedintheOSS

conference series. We are pleased to contribute this volume of papers to the growing
bodyofknowledgeaboutopensourcesoftware.Theresearchresultspresentedinthis
conferencecanhaveasignificantinfluenceonthefutureofopensourcesoftware.
