About the e ditors
Julie Coppola is an assistant professor of education and co-
ordinator of the bilingual education and teaching english as
a second language (pre-k–12) programs at boston university,
massachusetts, usA. her teaching and research focus on two
areas: (1) first and second language and literacy development
with a particular focus on young english language learners
(ells) and (2) preparing preservice and inservice teachers
to meet the needs of this student population. she has pub-
lished numerous book chapters and journal articles in these areas and is the
author of Teaching English Language Learners in Grades K–3: Promoting Language
and Literacy Development.
A former first-grade bilingual/english as a second language teacher, Julie is
a frequent contributor at local, national, and international language and literacy
conferences. she has conducted extensive site-based professional development
programs in teaching ells for school districts throughout massachusetts. she
frequently consults with school districts on efforts to improve second language
and literacy curricula.
Julie is an active member of the international reading Association. she
has held leadership roles in her local council and served on the multilingual
Classroom Committee and the Commission on second language literacy and
learning.
Julie and her husband, robert, a professor of environmental design, are the
parents of two children: Ann, a business analyst, and matt, a college student.

elizabeth V. Primas is the director of advanced programs
for the district of Columbia public schools, an adjunct pro-
fessor of education at george washington university, and the
director of education and technology for the prince george’s
County, maryland, housing Authority.
previously, elizabeth was director of literacy: read-
ing and language arts for the district of Columbia public
schools and teacher-in-residence at educational testing
vii
services, princeton, new Jersey, usA, where she led the development of the
national board Certification requirements for elementary and middle school
literacy: reading/english language arts teachers. A former reading specialist,
elizabeth has received numerous teaching awards, including the 2000 district
of Columbia teacher of the Year Award.
elizabeth is an active member of international reading Association and
most recently cochaired the urban diversity initiatives Commission. she is
also a member of the national Council of teachers of english and serves on
the Commission on Children’s literature. elizabeth was inducted into the phi
delta kappa honor society, george washington university Chapter, and she is
a member of the national Alliance of black school educators.
elizabeth enjoys writing poetry, painting, skiing, and traveling abroad.
she is married to Vincent V. lewis and takes her greatest pleasure in her fam-
ily, which spans five generations from her mother to her youngest offspring.
