To a Late Teacher of Elocution
Emerson College was your background (my parents had checked), and although you were familiar with Del Sarte's teaching you preferred the less Catholic­trinitarian 
and far more liberal approaches of Tassin and Alexander. And you had spent a year in Glasgow in the voice choirs of Marjorie Gullen. How could my parents miss, 
then? Their purpose, after all, was to give an unruly little boy a ''cultured manner" (your phrase), which he neither came by naturally nor was likely to acquire from his 
companions.
You died before the Fifties were barely out. But I can see you still, with your heavily made up face, that tiara, the expressive feather boa, and the occasional chiton. 
"Let the gesture begin with the elbow and flow out to the finger tips." I recall your doomed efforts to give me a pliable pose: "Feel the fatigue, the tiredness, of the 
ploughman as he homeward plods his weary way." I recall, too, your equally doomed efforts to soften my Midwestern twang: "Not 'charractur.' Cha'ahktah. Not 
'coss­toom,' coz­tiume." "Pear­shaped tones, Tommy, pear­shaped tones." Later, I was disappointed to find that "How now, brown cow?" is not, as I had assumed 
(ass­siumed), from Shakespeare.
Though I was meant to learn "culture," what I actually acquired were certain ideas, certain attitudes which you simply took for

granted, and now hardly anyone does. Nowadays these ideas and attitudes seem atavistic. And ''culture" no longer means what you took it to mean. Recalling these 
matters, these assumptions, I've dedicated this book to you. And to your wayward descendants and neglected progenitors.
Through you I was put in touch with an ancient tradition, something simpler and deeper than the "wondrous strange" results of your lessons. I mean simpler and deeper 
than the exaggerated acting of silent movies, or the florid orotundity of stump speakers, replete with jumbled retrievals from a literary trash heap. Partly it was a sense 
of something that had been passed down not through letters but through, well, spirit. Let me try to be specific. I learned from you and from other speech teachers 
doctrines whose patent obviousness has been almost willfully ignored of late: that discourse is an instrument of the body as well as of the mind, that a word is nothing 
unless spoken by someone to someone with some clear intention, that language—as a critic I came to admire said—is gesture. It was from you, too, that I learned 
why teachers are important and why it is that we are right to call a good education a "sound" education.
Who would have guessed, back then, that fifty years later some of these simple matters would become side­stepped in heated intellectual controversies, all arising 
from our frantic concerns about the nature of language? The metanovel, born of fears that the novel is no longer possible; deconstruction, born of fears that words 
really are tossed into a void; new historicism, born of fears that poststructuralism has pulled the rug out from under "English Studies"; political correctness, born of 
fears on the one hand and hopes on the other that education just might be indoctrination after all. It was healing to return, not to elocution, but to the mother of 
elocution, Rhetoric, and read again Cicero on the synergetic nature of spoken language: speech takes at least two people, he said, and the other person is partly going 
to determine not just what you say but what you think. And when dealing with people, he said, don't forget your sense of humor. Humor works, in a variety of ways.
I can yet recall your story about the wittiness of your old actor friend, Roger Bonifield. Roger rose to the top of the heap in an actors' studio exercise, one of the early 
efforts to inject "realism" into the theatre: A waterfront was to be depicted on stage. The hero

was to enter and find the heroine's gloves, purse, and parasol on the peer and assume that she's jumped in. Whipping off his coat, he was to jump in too, to rescue her 
(to the sound effects of splashing water). On the day of the exercise, however, the pad which was to have been placed at the end of pier to soften the hero's dry 
plunge had been removed. Roger, alas, discovered its removal only when he was in midair. But with perfect aplomb, following the noise of the crash—which drowned 
out the other sound effects—he pulled himself together and, lifting his bruised head over the end of the pier, faced the class to say, ''Well I'll be damned, the lake's 
frozen over."
Resourcefulness, you said, was the point of the story. Traditional rhetoricians, I learned later, called this kind of resourcefulness copia. It was part of their lesson not 
simply about humor but about linguistic strategies, irony, and illusion.
As a teacher of performance you had a career as a writer staked out for me. The irony of the lesson escaped me at the time. But another kind of illusion­making 
became my love—teaching, another subject now much in the news.
And it has been for the better part of this century. I am speaking of university teaching. About the time you entered Emerson, we can see now, there was a revolution 
going on in university education. We began to adopt a scientific model for all knowledge while we also crazily instituted softly unscientific courses aimed simply at 
training people to live harmoniously in modern society. The university has become "a motley social organism," Barzun in his latest book says contemptuously, 
"dedicated to the full life." Other critiques, of variable reputability—Bloom, Hirsch, Sykes, Lehman, D'Souza, Kimball, Cheney—all but drown out older voices like 
Dewey's or newer ones like Graff's and make even John Searle seem reactionary. Searle ends his long essay on education in the New York Review of Books (1990) 
calling for a return to of all things a core curriculum. We had given up on core curricula thirty years ago, back in the 1960s when we decided that students might be 
less disaffected if they had a role in governing the university—and their first action was to get rid of most required courses. Searle's core curriculum—he probably 
wouldn't call it that—restores the idea that there are certain kinds of skills, among them proficiency in writing and speaking, that we should expect an educated person 
to have.

Alas, not only have we given up on the core curriculum, we seem also to have given up on any clear idea about what an educated person is. ''Nobody denies that most 
students entering most colleges write badly, read little, speak in puzzling fragments, and hence in effect think badly or not at all," laments Wayne Booth. "They then 
enter 'programs,' most of which require little writing, scant reading (and then only of an undemanding kind, the predigested pablum of most textbooks), no disciplined 
speech, and 'thinking' only of whatever kind is useful in practicing a given specialty."
You, too, for that matter, were involved in this fragmentation, the kind that began soon after the turn of the century. The year you graduated from Emerson, 1915, was 
also the year when the speech and English disciplines split forever. And Speech has now split further into something like the division between "hard" social science and 
"soft" humanities. Your own literary education was centered in elocution, but you eagerly turned that, elocution, into a specialty—that is, into a profession, which (as 
George Bernard Shaw had said) was like all professions a conspiracy against the public.
In all this fragmentation, which has continued its long division for over seventy­five years, we have lost something important and it's conditioned our view of rhetoric. 
We've lost the very heart of the rhetorical creative process. Little wonder that we think of rhetoric as, at best, the writing of expository prose for an only vaguely 
sensed audience or, at worst, purple prose and specious reasoning for a very definite, targetted audience. Or that those who do think of it as training in argumentation 
actually give a truncated view of its intellectual procedures.
Although you were part of the fragmentation, you nonetheless held onto a certain wholeness, which was whatever you seemed to mean by "culture." Whatever you 
meant, I know your ideas would change the very matter at issue in modern quarrels over education. "There can't be good speaking," you said, "unless there is good 
listening, too."
There was even a certain wholeness in your comic instruction based on oppositions: when one rises from a chair, you taught, one should locate the center of gravity in 
the chest, not in the "bum" where it tries to be; and thus when one rises from a chair, one had to consider both the chest as well as the "bum." (Was this the Alexander 
method?) The doctrine parodies an intellectual habit I'll de­

scribe in this book. Your point, like Henry Higgins', was transformation. Mine is access. But we are linked in our view of language: it is, au fond, more than words.
