The Hall-Littlewood polynomials H(cid:22)[X;t] = (cid:21)`j(cid:22)jK(cid:21)(cid:22)(t)s(cid:21)[X] where K(cid:21)(cid:22)(t) is the
Kostka-Foulkes polynomial, are a one parameter family of symmetric functions which
form a basis for all symmetric functions. Lascoux and Schu(cid:127)tzenberger show that there
exists a statistic called charge on column strict tableaux such that the Hall-Littlewood
polynomials are given by the formula

ThereexistsasymmetricpolynomialoperatorHm thathasthepropertythatHmH(cid:22)[X;t]
= H(m;(cid:22))[X;t]form (cid:21) (cid:22)1. Wegiveanintroduction toLascouxandSchu(cid:127)tzenberger'sJeu
de Taquin and tableau operators. We describe a combinatorial method for computing
the action of the Hm operator on the Schur function basis, s(cid:21)[X]. This action can then
be translated into an operator on column strict tableaux to show how the column strict
tableaux of content (m;(cid:22)) are created from the column strict tableaux of content (cid:22) and
to provide an alternate proof of ((cid:3)).
