Abstract Asmallagoninecarabidbeetle,Agontm1(Ago,!urn)jankou,ski1LAFERis
redescribedfromSakhalinandJapan,andisnewlyaddedtothecarabidfaunaofJapan.
TherearetwoundeterminedspecimensofasinglespeciesofthegenusAgonum
inmyco11ection.0neofthemisamalefromSakhalinandtheotherisafemalefrom
theSarobetsuMoorofHokkaido,NorthJapan.Earlyinthisyear,Dr.G.Sh.LAFERhad
anopportunitytovisittheNaturalHistoryMuseumandInstitute,Chiba,Japan,andI
wasabletomeethimatChibaandsubmittedmyspecimenstohimthroughthecour-
tesyofDr.SAIToof themuseum.Althoughhedidnothaveenough timetoclosely
studythegenitalorgan,themalespecimenofmycollectionwasdeterminedbyhimas
AgonumJankowskii,whichhadbeenbrieflydescribedbyhimself fromthePrimorskij
Territory inthe“KeytotheInsectsofRussianFarEast”. Inthispaper,Iwillshowthe
malegenitalorganbasedonasinglemalefromSakhalin,andrecordthisspecies for
thefirsttimefromJapan.
The abbreviations used herein areas follows: HW-greatest width of head;
PW -greatestwidthofpronotum;PL- lengthofpronotum,measuredalongthemid-
line; PA -widthofpronota1apex;PB-widthofpronota1base, measuredbetween
postangular setae; EW-greatest width of elytra; EL-greatest length of elytra;
TL- lengthofmetatarsus;PTL -1engthofsegment2ofprotarsus,measuredalongthe
mid-line;PTW-greatestwidthofsegment2ofprotarsus.

ThisspeciesiscloselyalliedtoAgonum(Agonum)sculptipes(BATES)(l883,p.
257),but isdistinguished fromitbythefollowingpoints:1)smallerbody,2)smaller
eyes,3) lessstronglyarcuatesidesofpronotum, 4)widerbasal part ofelytra, 5) ro-
busterlegs,6)PTW/PTL1.00in3,0.82in9,7)TL/HW129in c,1.23in9,8)han-
