INTRODUCTION
ThepurposeofalleditingcarriedoutbyPublicationServicesistomaximizetheaccuracyandreadabilityofamanuscript
withoutalteringtheauthor(cid:146)smeaningorstyle.Inherentinthisprocessarethefollowingpractices:
D adherencetostandardOntarioGeologicalSurvey(OGS)guidelinesregardingreportandmaplegendlayout,litho-
logicnomenclature,andacceptedspellingandhyphenationofgeologicalterms
D adherencetorecognizedrulesofgrammar,spellingandpunctuationasdetailedinthevariousreferencevolumes
approvedforusewithinPublicationServices
D adherencetothestandardscientificmethodofhypothesisbasedonverifiableobservations
D eliminationofanystatementsprejudicialtogovernmentpolicy,eitherpastorpresent
D adherencetoManagementBoardofCabinetDirectivesandGuidelines,particularlythoserelatingtocopyrightand
intellectualproperty
However,thesepracticesshouldbeconsideredonlyasmeanstoanend(cid:151)thatofproducingthemostcoherentanduseful
publicationpossibleinthetimeavailable(cid:151)andnotasendsinthemselves.
ThefirsteditionoftheOGSEditorialGuidewastheresultofalengthyseriesofeditorialmeetingsheldin1989,andwas
(cid:147)published(cid:148)inSeptemberofthatyear.ItwasoriginallyintendedonlyasacomprehensivehandbookforPublicationSer-
viceseditors.However,thelevelofauthorinterestinitscontents,evenbeforeitwascompleted,promptedustomakethe
guideavailabletoallinterestedstaffwithintheMinesandMineralsDivision.Wemerelyaskedthatauthorsignorethose
partswhichpertainedonlytotheeditingofreportsandmaps.
Weaskedforcommentsonthecontentandformatofthefirsteditionandwerepleasedthatanumberofpeopletookthe
timetopreparethoughtfulcommentsandsuggestionsforimprovement.Allwerediscussed,andasmanyaspossible
wereincorporatedintothesecondedition,whichwasreleasedinSeptember1990.Athirdedition,withoutappendixes,
wasreleasedinJuly1995.
Wehavebeencollectingcommentsfromeditors,bothinternalandcontract,andfromOGSstaffduringthepast5‰years.
Withthenewdigitalmappingstandardsandmanuscriptsubmissionstandardsfinalized,andthetransitiontodigitalpro-
ductionandon-demandreproductioncompleted,itisanappropriatetimetoupdatetheOGSEditorialGuidewithanew
editionthatshouldseeusintothenextmillennium.Aswasthecasewithitspredecessors,allaspectsofthisnewedition
havebeendiscussedandapprovedbytheOGSPublicationsWorkingGroup.
Reference Sources
InordertoprovideconsistencyinthepublicationsoftheOGS,allauthors(fromthevarioussections)andeditors(in
Publication Services), must use the same reference sources for spelling, hyphenation and grammar. The following
sourceshavebeeninusesince1989:
1. Webster(cid:146)sNinthNewCollegiateDictionaryAfterseriousconsideration,theeditorialstaffofPublicationServices
chosethisdictionaryduetoitsextensivecoverageoftechnicalandscientificterminologyanditsavailability.Al-
thoughthetentheditionhasnowbeenpublished,wehavedecidedtostaywiththeolderversionduetothereplace-
mentcost.However,theneweditionisperfectlyacceptableifyoualreadyhaveit.
2. GlossaryofGeology,ThirdEdition(AmericanGeologicalInstitute)Thishasbeenchosenasthereferencesource
forgeologicalterms,anditsspellingstakeprecedenceoverthoseofWebster(cid:146)sintheeventofaconflict.
3. TheCanadianStyle,AGuidetoWritingandEditing(DepartmentoftheSecretaryofStateofCanada)Thisstyle
guidewaschosenbecauseofitscompactsizeandbecauseitattemptstodealobjectivelywithCanadianpractices.
4. MetricPracticeGuidefortheCanadianMiningandMetallurgicalIndustries(MiningAssociationofCanada)This
bookletwaschosenastheprimaryreferenceformetric(SI)abbreviationsandconversionfactors.
5. GazeteerofCanada(cid:151)Ontario,FourthEdition,1988(NaturalResourcesCanada)Thisistheonlyofficialsource
forthecorrectspellingofgeographicalnames.
6. TheCanadianMinesHandbook(SouthamBusinessCommunicationsInc.)Thispublication(releasedyearly)is
usedtocheckthespellingandcapitalizationofthenamesofminingandexplorationcompanies.

EveryeditorwhoworksinPublicationServiceslearnsthattheroleoftheeditoristobeapartnertotheauthorandan
advocateforthereader.Inpracticalterms,it(cid:147)istheauthor(cid:146)sscientificresponsibilitytowriteastorythatreaderswill
understand,ratherthantomakeanexerciseincreativeprose.Theeditor(cid:146)sresponsibilityistohelpanauthorpresent
