In memory of two models of optimal aging who taught in our Occupational
Therapy with Aging Adults course at Saint Louis University for a decade:
Augusta R. Feehan, 106 years, Matriarch of Christ Church Cathedral,
St. Louis, Missouri, and Gus G. Sotiropulos, 89 years, DDS, MS,
Director, Orthodontia Clinic, Center for Advanced Dental Education.
Always in good humor, Gus and Gussie regaled OT students with stories and
wisdom about the aging process and the secrets of their full, occupationally
engaged lives. They both sustained active work and social lives until shortly
before their deaths.
To my husband, Steve, my soulmate and best friend—a feminist prior to
the Women’s Movement. In 1965, the year that the St. Louis Gateway Arch
came together and Medicare was enacted, we married, grew older through
the intervening years, and continue to experience the best there is to be along
the way.
