published in 1993.Sincealmostall noveltieswere already published in precursors,
only threeremaintobeformalized:anew variety in Prunusarborea, anew namere-
placing anillegitimate nameinRubus,andanew combinationinNeillia.
NEILLIA
Neilliathyrsiflora D.DonandN. fallax (Blume) Blumehaveusually beenconsidered
asconspecific andindeeditis notpossible to distinguish two species, making useof
characterslike shape ofinflorescence, numberofstamens, numberofovules. The
only characterwhichdoes not produce an unbrokencontinuity is foundinthe indu-
mentum onraceme axis andpedicels. Thisdoes not warrant recognition onspecies
levelbuttwo varietiescanbemaintained.

Inflorescences incl. pedicels hairy. Ovary long-hairy all over or at least with long
hairsnear suture andbase,rarely (partofSumatraspecimens) glabrous.
Distribution - ContinentalAsia,Sumatra, Java.
var. fallax (Blume) Kalkman, comb, et stat. nov. —.Adenilemafallax Blume,

Inflorescencesglabrous,pedicels sometimes withfewshorthairs. Ovary glabrous or
withfewlong hairsonly.
Distribution- Sumatra, Java.

InBlumea13(1965) Icombinedanumberofpreviously recognized Prunus(Pygeum)
species withfascicledinflorescencesasPrunusarborea(Blume)Kalkman. Thisisin
vegetative andinfruitcharactersarathervariablespecies inwhichfive varieties were
recognized.
The materialof one ofthese, var. stipulacea, containeda numberofdeviating
specimens fromhigheraltitudeandapossible subdivision ofthevariety was men-
tionedbutnot formalized.Morematerialaccumulatedinthepast 25 yearsandnowI
thinkthatrecognition ofasixth separatevariety is warranted.
Prunus arborea(Blume) Kalkmanvar. alticolaKalkman, var. nov.
Avar.stipulaceain nervis secundariis paucioribus,testaplerumqueglabra,etinaltitudinibus altiori-
bus crescenti differt. —Typus: De Wilde & De Wilde-Duyfjes 15994,Aceh,Sumatra (holoin L).
Differsfromvar. stipulacea inhaving fewer secondary nerves, usually a glabrous
testa, andingrowing inhigher altitudes.
Distribution- Sumatra, Borneo, Celebes; in forest, at (1000-)1500-3000 m
altitude.
Key forthedistinctionofvar. stipulaceaand var. alticola:
Leaves ovateto elliptic,6—13(—16) by 2.5-8.5(-12)cm,with8-10 pairs ofnerves;
seed coat glabrous or with fewhairs var. alticola
Leaves elliptic to oblong, rarely±ovate, 10-22(-25) by4-9(-13) cm, with(7-)
10—13(—16) pairs ofnerves; seedcoat hairy, sometimes only sparsely so, rarely
glabrous var. stipulacea

Rubus cordiformis Kalkman wasdescribedin 1987as anew species insect. Micran-
thobatus.AsDr. A.A.vandeBeekpointed outtome, theepithet was already usedin
1981foraEuropean species byWeber&Martensen.Anewepithet hastherefore to
bepublished.
