Introduction
ArevisionofthesubgenusEosteropus(TscHITscHtRINE,1902,p 499) fromJapan
wasproposedby TANAKA (l958),andhisviewhasbeenwidelyacceptedbyvarious
authors. When Dr. Yuki IMuRA visited the Zoological Instituteof theAcademyof
Sciences, Sankt-Peterburg in l994, he had an opportunity to examineseveral type
materialsofcarabidspeciesdescribedbyMoRAwITz. Inthesematerials,wereincluded
thetypespecimensofPterostichuspro1ongatusandP fuliginous,bothbelongingtothe
subgenus Eosteropus. Later, he offered for my study photographs and interesting
informationabout therelationshipof theseforms. Dr. LAFERalsostudiedthetype
specimensofP.pr()1ongatusandinformedmeabout theresultsofhisstudy.
In 1998, LORENZregardedP.pro1ongatus asajuniorsynonym ofP.Japonlcus
describedbyMoTscHULsKYandP fuliginousasagoodspecies.
Inthispaper,IamgoingtodealwithvariationofP. (11.)Japonlcus, toclarifythe
systematicpositionofP.pro1ongatusandfuliginous,andtodescribefivenewspecies
fromEast Japan.
Materialsand Methods
This study of the Japanesespecies of thesubgenus Eosteropus is based on an
examinationofmorethan700specimens. Themalegenitaliaof eachpopulationof all
thespecieswereexamined.

The abbreviations used herein are as follows: L - body length, measured from
apicalmarginofclypeustoapicesofelytra;HW-greatestwidthofhead;PW- greatest
widthofpronotum;PL- lengthofpronotum,measuredalongthemid-line;PA - width
of pronotal apex; PB- width of pronota1base; EW - greatest width of elytra; EL-
