Abstract AnewspeciesofPido川arelatedtopchat,・oisdescribedfromthesub-
alpinezoneofChtibuDistrictunderthenameof 11ayakawai.
ThelepturinegenusPidonlaMULsANTconsistsof150speciesdistributedoverthe
temperatezoneoftheHolarcticRegion.MostofthemareknowntooccurinEastAsia.
Uptothepresent,56speciesofthegenusPidonlahavebeenrecordedfromJapan,par-
ticularlyrichinspeciesinthemountainousareasofChubuDistrict.Forinstance,29
species occur in Azumi-mura, Minamiazumi-gun,Nagano Prefecture, which is a
mountain villagewithanareaofabout400squarekilometers (KuBoKl,1998). The
presentpapercontainstheresultofmystudyonthespeciesofthegenusPidonlaob-
tainedinthemountainousareasofChubuDistrictwithadescriptionofPidonla(P)
hayakawain.sp. Theverticaldistributional rangeofthisspeciesisclarifiedandthe
correlationof thedistributionpatternwithvertical vegetational zonations isshown.
TheholotypedesignatedinthisstudyispreservedinthecollectionoftheNationalSci-
enceMuseum(Nat.Hist),Tokyo.

Male. Body medium-size elongate,slightly taperedapicad. General colour
reddish fulvoustoblack and furnishedwithpale fulvouspubescence. Head reddish
fulvous;vertexdarkened;mouthpartsfulvousexcept forreddishbrownapexofeach
mandible;templesreddishbrown;antennaereddish fulvous,firstandsecondsegments
reddish fulvous, thirdand followingsegmentsinfuscateattheirapices.Prothorax red-

dish fulvouswithapairofblackportionswhichbroaden fromlateralpart todisc.
Scutellumreddish fulvous.Legsalmost fulvous;eachapexofmidandhind femora
faintlydarkbrown;apexofeachtarsusinfuscate;clawsdarkbrown.Elytrayellowish
fulvous with blackmarkings. Elytra1markings:- Sutural marking faintly present;
basalmarkingnarrowlypresent;1atero-basalandlatero-medianmarkingssmall;apical
bandbroadlypresent. Ventral surface: - Hea thoraces andabdomen fulvous; first
andsecondsternitesblack;meso-andmetasternablack.
Headacrossthemiddleofeyes1.17timesaswideasbaseofprothorax; terminal
segmentofmaxillarypalpusbroadenedapicallywithstraightoutermargin; temples
stronglyproduce convergentandabruptlyconstrictedatneck; fronssubverticaIand
transverse,coveredwithcoarsepunctures,bearingafinebutdistinctmedianlongitudi-
nal furrow extending backwards; vertex fairly at, weakly convex above, coarsely
punctateandsparselyclothedwithfinepubescence.Eyesrelativelyprominent,moder-
ately facetedandstrongly emarginateatmiddleofinternalmargins. Antennaerela-
tively long andslender; apical onesegmentsurpassingelytral apices; comparative
lengthofeachsegmentasfollows:5>3=1十2=6>4.
Prothorax1.13timesaslongasbase,dullyangulate-prominentlateradjustbefore
themiddle,deeplyconstrictedbothanteriadandposteriad;breadthacrossprominent

punctate, sparsely clothed with fine pubescence. Scutellum small and triangular,
slightlylongerthanbroa bearingthinpubescenceonthesurface.Elytra2.70timesas
longasbasalwidth,graduallynarrowedposteriadandseparately truncateat apices;
surfacesparselyanddeeplypunctate,sparselyclothedwithsubappressedpubescence;
interspacebetweenpuncturesnarrowerthandiameterofeachpuncture.Legsrelatively
slender,clothedwithshortpubescence; femoraclavate;hindfemoranot reachingely-
tra1apices; tibiaelinear,straight; tarsidenselyclothedwithshortpubescenceonthe
undersurface.
Abdomen elongate and gradually narrowed towardsapex; apex of last tergite
roundandshallowlyemarginateatmiddle,bothlateralanglesobtuse;apexoflastster-
nitetriangularlyemarginateatmiddle,bothlateralanglessomewhatangular(Fig 3).
Genitalia: - Medianlobefalcateinlateralview,relativelyslender,stronglycurved
ventradandsharplypointedatapex(Fig4);laterallobesslightlyshorterthanmedian
lobe,eachapexproducedandsparsely furnishedwithrelativelyshort terminalhairs;
endopha11uslongandfurnishedwithapairof falcatesclerites;diverticulumrelatively
short and lanceolate.
Length:9.7-7.5mm,breadth:2.5-1.9mm.
Female. Bodymorerobustandblackmarkingsmoreenlargedin femalethan
inmale. Apexofeachmaxillarypalpussometimesdark brown. Apex ofeachmid
femur infuscate;apicalhalfofeachhind femurblack.Prothoraxalmostblackexcept
forreddishfulvousapexandbase.Elytralmarkings: - Suturalmarkingdistinctlypres-
ent,theapexofsuturalmarkingbroadenedtriangularlyinapicaleighthofelytra;basal
markingdistinctlypresent; latero-basa1markingsmall, linear-oblong;1atero-median
markingverysmall,oblong;1atero-apicalmarkinglarge,deltoid;apicalbandbroadly
present.Ventralsurface: - Abdomenalmost fulvous; first tothirdsternitesdarkened
laterad;meso-andmetasternablack.

Distribution. Japan(centralHonshu).
TheverticaldistributionofthisspeciesisshowninFig 5 inconnectionwith the
vertical vegetational zones ofJapanexcludingHokkaido. Its distributional range is
verticallylimitedtotheupperpartoftheFtaguszoneandevergreenconiferzone.
IexaminedanumberofspecimensbelongingtothechatrogroupofthegenusPi-
donlafromthesubalpinezoneoftheYatsugatakeMts.,NaganoPrefectureandconsid-
eredthattheywereclassifiedintotwogoodspecies,thatis,F)chairoTAMANuKIandF)
hayakawaisp nov.Similarly,thesetwospecieswerecollected fromAzumi-mura,Mi-
namiazumi-gun,NaganoPrefecture.

Flower records. Rhododendron fauriae, Solbus commix;ta, Hydrangea

Remarks. Thisnewspeciesresembles i)cha1lo TAMANUKlbutmay bereadily
distinguished from it by the truncated apicesof the elytra, theslender andsharply
curvedmedianlobeofmalegenitalia, thelongerandslendererdiverticulumofmale

genitalia,theangularlyprojectedramusofspermathecainthefemaleandthetriangu-
larlyanddeeplyemarginatelaststernitewithobtuselateralanglesinthemale.
ThisnewspeciesiscloselyalliedtoPftalcataoccurringinKyushu,Shikokuand
ChugokuDistricts.ThetwospeciesPfalcataandPhayakawai formaspecies-group
inthesubgenusPidonias.str.,whichismainlycharacterizedbythefollowingcombi-
nationofmorphological features:prothoraxblackexcept for fulvousapexandbase;
median lobe of male genitalia falcate in lateral view, relatively slender, strongly
curved;apexoflaststerniteofmaletriangularlyemarginateatmiddle.
Etymology. ThespecificnameofthisnewspeciesisgivenafterMr.Hirofumi
HAYAKAwA, Matsumoto-shi,NaganoPrefecture,whoisoneofthemost famous re-
searchersoftheinsectsintheShinshudistricts.

窪木幹夫:束アジア産ヒメハナカミキリ属の知見. vIII.本州中部地方の亜高山帯から発見さ
れたPidon,a属の1新種. - 本州中部地方のブナ帯上部から亜高山帯で採集されたPido,,Ia
属の新種, Rhayaka、、,a,シンシュウヒメハナカミキリを記載した. 本種は, 従来 chai,-o ヤノ
ヒメハナカミキリと混同されてきたが, 上翅端が切断状であること, 雄交尾器の中葉片が細く,
より強く湾曲すること, 雄交尾器の中葉片のうち陰茎に付着する盲管がより長く, 細いこと,
雌の受精嚢の突出部が角張ること, 雄の腹板末端節の側縁角が丸みを帯び, 中央が三角形に深
く切れ込むことなどで区別できる. 八ヶ岳の亜高山帯針葉樹林での調査では, c/fall・o種群に所
属する2種のヒメハナカミキリ, Flc/fat,-oTAMANuKl とi)ha、・aka、、、a1spnov.が採集された. 長野
県南安曇村での調査でも, これら2種が採集された. 中部地方に分布する /ayaka、,,a,は, 中
国地方西部, 四国, 九州に分布する falcataとともに, Pido,fia亜属のなかで一つの種群を構
成する. なお, 種名は長野県松本市扉在住の昆虫研究家早川広文氏に献名した.
