THEUNIVERSITY
HISTORY
NorthwesternStateUniversityofLouisianastandsongroundthathasbeendedicatedtolearning
forwelloverahundredyears.PriortotheCivilWaraportionofthepresentcampuswastheproperty
oftheBullardfamilyofNatchitoches.Asearlyas 1856theBullardmansionwasinuseasaconvent
bytheReligiousoftheSocietyoftheSacredHeart.Thefollowingyearaschoolbuildingwaserected
attheconvent,andin1884thepropertywaspurchasedbythetownandparishofNatchitoches.Three
ofthefourgreatwhitecolumnsthatoncesupportedtheeastgableoftheBullardmansionstillstand
on"TheHill"andoftenserveastheunofficialsymboloftheUniversity.

from1885to1918theNormalSchoolofferedtwoyearsofstudyforthetrainingofteachers.Baccalaureate
programsweretheninaugurated,andtheStateConstitutionadoptedin1921changedthenameofthe
schooltoLouisianaStateNormalCollege.
Theresourcesandcurriculaof"Normal"grewsteadilytomeettheincreasinglydiverserequirements
ofLouisiana'sexpandingpopulation.In1944theinstitution'sexcellent.serviceinitsbroaderrolewas
accordedformalrecognitioninAct326oftheLegislature,whichchangeditsnametoNorthwestern
StateCollegeofLouisiana.
Northwesternmaintainedandstrengtheneditslongtraditionofleadershipinpublicserviceand
academicendeavorandbecame,in1954,thefirstcollegeunderthejurisdictionoftheLouisianaState
BoardofEducationtooffertheMaster'sdegree.TheSpecialistinEducationdegreewasfirstoffered
in1966.
OnJune 18, 1970,GovernorJohnJ.McKeithensignedthelegislativeactwhichbroughttheold
schoolitsgreatestdistinctionbychangingitstitletoNorthwesternStateUniversityofLouisiana.
In1980theoldcampusquadranglewherethecolumnsstandwasenteredintotheNationalRegister
ofHistoricPlacesunderthetitle"NormalHillHistoricDistrict."
In1984NorthwesternStateUniversitycelebrateditsCentennialwithlectures,concerts,socialevents,
andaneffectivefundraisingeffortthatestablishedtheCentennialDevelopmentFund.Inadditionto
themaincampusinNatchitoches,thepresentUniversityhaspermanentfacilitieslocatedinLeesviile
andShreveportandoffersinstructionatothercentersincentralLouisiana.
LOCATION
ThemainUniversitycampuscoversanareaofsome916acresimmediatelywestofNatchitoches,
Louisiana.Thecityisinthenorthwesternpartofthestateabout50milesnorthwestofAlexandriaand
75milessoutheastofShreveport,Louisiana'sthirdlargestcity.
Thecampus,encompassingrollingpinehillsandrichriverbottomland,isoneofthemostspacious
andattractiveintheSouth.Thenaturalbeautyofthesitedrewpeopletoiteveninprehistorictimes.
LongthehomeofamajorIndiantribeforwhichitwasnamed,NatchitocheswasfortifiedbytheFrench
in1714asanoutpostoftheirNewWorldempirefacingSpanishTexastothewest.Thecitytodaytakes
prideinitsstandingastheoldestpermanentsettlementintheentireLouisianaPurchaseTerritory.Although
thefiresofCivilWarscarredtheCaneRiverCountry,Natchitochesescapedrelativelyunharmed,and
manytracesofitscolonialandantebellumheritagesremain.
Nowacityofabout25,000,Natchitocheshasanexcellentsystemofpublicschools,numerous
churches,alargemodemhospital,andaprogressivemunicipalgovernment.Situatedonthebanksof
thebeautifulCaneRiver,Chaplin's,andSibleylakes,andlyingintheheartofLouisiana'slakeand
forestcountry,thecityrightlymaybedescribedascolorfulandunique.
TheNursingEducationCenterinShreveportat 1800LineAve.istheresidentialcampusforthe
DepartmentsofUndergraduateStudiesinNursingandGraduateStudiesandResearchinNursing.The
NursingEducationCenteriscomposed ofinstitutional facilities including instructional areas and
