Bill Gates’ Idee eines neuen Marktes für Software schlug in der idealistischen Hackerwelt ein wie eine Bombe. Schließlich war man dort der Meinung, daß jeder Programmierer sein Wissen von anderen habe und nur ein offener Austausch eine Weiterentwicklung gewährleisten könne. Bill Gates wollte sein Wissen weder mit anderen Hackern teilen, noch sah er ein, daß seine Software von anderen ohne Bezahlung kopiert oder verändert werden durfte. Verärgert schrieb Bill Gates schließlich einen offenen Brief, den sogenannten »Open Letter« an den Homebrew Computer Club. Darin beschuldigte er diejenigen als Diebe, die seine Software ohne Bezahlung benutzten und kopierten. Der Gedanke einer »illegalen Kopie« sorgte für Verwirrung und machte den jungen Bill Gates noch unbeliebter. Der wirtschaftliche Erfolg der Software von Microsoft übertraf jedoch bald selbst die Entwicklung bei den Industrierechnern von IBM. Durch Gates’ Geschäftssinn wurde die Software von Microsoft erfolgreicher, als man es sich je vorgestellt hatte. In den folgenden Jahren eroberte Microsoft den Softwaremarkt für Betriebssysteme zunächst mit dem Produkt MS-DOS (Microsoft Disk Operation System), später mit Microsoft Windows. Und je mehr Marktanteile Microsoft gewann, desto klarer wurde, daß Software nicht immer frei bleiben konnte. Sie wurde zu einem kommerziellen Produkt, für das man zu bezahlen hatte. Die Prophezeiung von Bill Gates, der Computermarkt würde eines Tages von Software dominiert werden, ging in Erfüllung. So sehr sich Computerfreaks auch gegen die Vermarktung von Software und Informationen gewehrt hatten, ein wichtiger Begriff wurde durch den Open Letter erstmals definiert: Die Raubkopie.
