A NOTE ON TRANSLATIONS
Throughout this Reader's Guide, I have relied primarily on Walter
Kaufmann's translation of Zur Genealogie der Moral, which he pre-
pared in collaboration with R. I Hollingdale for Random House.
On several occasions I have altered the text of the Kaufmann and
Hollingdale translation to accommodate improvements suggested
by other, more recent translations. (Full citations for these transla-
tions are found in the Bibliography.) Finally, on several occasions I
have altered the text of the Kaufmann and Hollingdale translation
in favour of my own translations, especially in order to correct for
formulations that are now dated, anachronistic, non-standard or
misleadingly non-neutral in gender specification. In making these
alterations, I have relied on the text of Zur Genealogie der Moral that
appears in Volume 5 of Friedrich Nietzsche, Samtliche Werke:
