EDITOR’S FOREWORD
This book is the outcome of a series of international seminars on Niccolò
Machiavelli and early modern European political philosophy held at Vytau-
tas Magnus University School of Political Science and Diplomacy in Kaunas,
Lithuania. The group of scholars, who contributed their articles to this volume,
started acting as an academic network made up by colleagues from Finland,
Germany, Romania, Estonia, and Lithuania.
This collections of articles is an attempt to rethink Machiavelli, one of the
most challenging and provocative political thinkers in the history of European

chiavelli wrote his puzzling letter to Lorenzo de’ Medici, Il Principe (The Prince,
written in 1513, and published in 1532). We are able to study the logic and the
dynamics of European political thought on the grounds of its hostile reactions

The Prince.Although nearly every scholar keeps repeating that Discourses on
Livy far surpasses The Prince in terms of scholarly weight, erudition, learning,
and intellectual value, The Prince does remain one of the landmark documents
of Renaissance political thought.
