Preface
Thisvolumecontainsthe39papersacceptedforpresentationattheworkshopsandthe
industrial session hosted by the 20th International Conference on Image Analysis and
Processing (ICIAP 2019), held in Trento, Italy, September 9–13, 2019. ICIAP is the
conference series organized every two years by the CVPL, the group of Italian
researchersaffiliatedwiththeInternationalAssociationforPatternRecognition(IAPR).
The aim of the conference is to bring together researchers working on image
processing, computer vision, and pattern recognition from around the world. Topics
traditionally covered are related to computer vision, pattern recognition, and image
processing, addressing both theoretical and applicative aspects.
Fourindividualworkshops–onefull-dayandthreehalf-day–wereselectedbythe
workshopchairsMarcoCristani(UniversityofVerona)andAndreaPrati(Universityof
Parma) to complement ICIAP 2019 in Trento:

A dedicated industrial session for researchers, practitioners and manufacturers was
included in the pre-conference program.
The Second International Workshop on Recent Advances in Digital Security:
Biometrics and Forensics (BioFor 2019) organized by Daniel Riccio (University of
Naples Federico II, Italy), Chang-Tsun Li (Deakin University, Australia), Francesco
Marra(UniversityofNaplesFedericoII,Italy),andDiegoGragnaniello(Universityof
NaplesFedericoII,Italy)providedaninternationalforumforscientistsandresearchers
to develop synergies between the biometrics and forensic research areas.
The First International Workshop on Pattern Recognition for Cultural Heritage
(PatReCH 2019) organized by Francesco Fontanella (University of Cassino and
Southern Lazio, Italy), Mario Molinara (University of Cassino and Southern Lazio,
Italy), and Filippo Stanco (University of Catania, Italy) aimed to give an overview of
recentadvancesinPattern Recognitiontechniquesfor dataanalysisandrepresentation
in the cultural heritage field.
TheFirstInternationalWorkshoponeHealthintheBigDataandDeepLearningEra
(e-BADLE 2019) organized by Tanmoy Chakarboty (Institute of Information Tech-
nology Delhi, India), Stefano Marrone (University of Naples Federico II, Italy), and
GiancarloSperlì(CINI-ITEMNationalLab,Naples,Italy)providedaforumtogather
recentadvancesinthebiomedicalimagesprocessingfieldtohelpadvancethescientific

research within the broad field of medical imaging using machine learning, deep
learning, and big data techniques.
The Workshop on Deep Understanding Shopper Behaviours and Interactions in
Intelligent Retail Environments (DeepRetail 2019) organized by Emanuele Frontoni
(UniversitàPolitecnicadelleMarche,Italy),SebastianoBattiato(UniversityofCatania,
Italy), Cosimo Distante (ISASI CNR, Italy), Marina Paolanti (Università Politecnica
delleMarche,Italy),LuigiDiStefano(UniversityofBologna,Italy),GiovanniMarina
Farinella(UniversityofCatania,Italy),AnnetteWolfrath(GFKVerein,Germany),and
PrimoZingaretti(UniversitàPolitecnicadelleMarche,Italy)aimedatencouragingand
highlighting novel strategies and original research in computer vision and pattern
recognition for shoppers’ behavior understanding, to build a network between Euro-
pean universities and industries and a roadmap for future deep learning applications.
TheIndustrialSessionorganizedbyLuigidiStefano(UniversityofBologna,Italy),
Vittorio Murino (Istituto Italiano di Technologia, Italy), Paolo Rota (University of
Trento, Italy), and Francesco Setti (University of Verona, Italy) brought together
researchers and practitioners in industrial engineering and computer science interested
in industrial machine vision to overview the state of the art and identify the most
interesting research lines. It was intended as a joint session for researchers to show
recent advancements in research projects on industrial applications and new tech-
nologies suitable for industrial environments, for practitioners to bring an applicative
point of view on the state of the practice in industry and take inspiration for their use
cases,formanufacturerstopresentthestateoftheartontechnologiesandcasestudies,
and challenge researchers and engineers with open problems.
We thank all the workshop organizers and the industrial session organizers who
made possible such an interesting program.
